I've been reflecting on a recent conversation between Walmart's CEO, Doug McMillon, and CPO, Donna Morris, two words Doug pointed out have been resounding in my mind - "opportunity" and "service". Doug described these as his guiding principle for the year ahead and the essence of Walmart respectively.
As I've pondered these words, I've recognized their profound intersection: the opportunity to serve others. This concept, though not new, is a vital component of our roles as servant leaders. As such, we should strive to embody this ethos and seize every chance to serve.
This week's Well-Being Wednesday post is inspired by this theme - finding fulfillment through service to others. As you know, the act of service is beautifully cyclical - as we extend our hands in kindness, we invariably find kindness extended towards us. So, this week, I encourage you to go the extra mile with your service through volunteer work.
Volunteering often peaks during the holidays, leaving many organizations in need during the rest of the year. Consider lending your time, resources, or skills to one such organization. The impact you make will be deeply rewarding for both you and the beneficiaries of your service. If you can involve your team in your volunteer efforts, even better (#SparkGood at #TeamWalmart)! Together, we can create a ripple of service that extends far beyond our immediate sphere, reinforcing our commitment to seize every opportunity to serve.

As we kick off National Volunteer Appreciation Month tomorrow, I'm reminded of the profound impact that building genuine, meaningful relationships can have on volunteer retention within the nonprofit sector. My time with the Boy Scouts of America underscored the value of these connections, showing that beyond traditional management techniques, it's the personal, individualized approach that truly makes a difference.
At the core of keeping volunteers engaged is recognizing their unique motivations and dedicating ourselves to developing real connections with them. This means being actively present at events, not just overseeing but participating and showing genuine appreciation for their efforts. Personal gestures like handwritten thank-you notes, acknowledging personal milestones, and remembering important dates demonstrate care and foster a deeper bond with the organization.
Creating a sense of community among volunteers, where they can connect and support each other, also plays a crucial role in retention. This approach not only makes volunteers more likely to stay but also turns them into ambassadors for the cause, driven by their strong connection to the mission and to each other.
The key to successful volunteer retention lies in these strong, genuine relationships. By focusing on individual connections, personal recognition, and fostering a sense of belonging, we can create a volunteer base that is not just committed for the short term but deeply dedicated to the cause for years to come. This month, let's celebrate the power of these relationships and the incredible impact they have on our missions and the volunteers who help propel them forward.
So take the time to show your volunteers how much you appreciate them in a unique and meaningful way to them.

February wraps up, feeling like a year's end in just two months! How's your 2024 so far? Any lessons shaping your path ahead? This month brought valuable experiences:
1. Volunteering at a FairPrice outlet during CNY work highlighted the importance of every cent. What seems small to some is substantial to others.
2. Respect is earned. CNY volunteering witnessed customers handing food to our frontliners, showing that kindness matters more than material things.
3. At a community event, the majority assumed one choice was wisest, but a thoughtful minority's alternative proved best—a reminder to be mindful of choices.
March awaits with these insights. In the words of Winston Churchill, "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts." 🚀 #FebruaryReflections#LifeLessons#WisdomThursday#GrowthMindset

Starting fresh as a Board Director earlier this year at Manly United FC, I wasn’t sure what value I was going to bring to the club to really bring our community together. But when I got the chance to lead our annual gala fundraiser, I saw it as my moment to let my creativity shine. I wanted the event to be epic, fun, and something people would be talking about—with the view of them wanting to come again the following year.
And honestly, it all came together better than I could’ve imagined! We had an incredible team of creatives, organisers, and people with can-do attitudes, and we pulled off a 210-person dinner that everyone loved. Sure, there were a few 4am starts to get this off the ground, and it sometimes felt like I was juggling two full-time jobs and family responsibilities, although seeing the community come together made every bit of it worth it.
Volunteering has always been an investment for me, both personally and professionally. I thrive on building relationships, finding joy in creating memorable moments, and giving something new a shot. I think of it as a way to use skills that might not always get the spotlight at work.
What skills do you possess that your day job may not always utilise? Or perhaps your manager doesn't realise you have. Or you may want to learn something new but are unable to do so at work.
Extend your reach by engaging in volunteer work, as this can serve as an ideal method to broaden your horizons, make new connections, and gain a new perspective.
A big shout out to my incredible husband Steve Elliott for being everything in our household for months so I can do what I do, Absolute Legend! And for our Gala Committee Team, it was no easy feat, although we pulled it off. Big thanks to our sponsors, who generously donated to our community.
And lastly, shout out to our incredible MC who brought our community together on the night, huge thank you to Dylan Macallister for donating his time and energy to our annual Manly United Football Club Fundraiser.

Investing in our community is not just about financial contributions; it's about actively engaging and giving back in meaningful ways. Today, our sales leadership team exemplified this commitment by swapping computers and meetings for flowers, mulch, rakes, and shovels, partnering with the City of St. Charles, MO to beautify a part of our city.
At Krey Distributing Company, we understand the importance of leading by example and fostering a culture of giving back. By dedicating our time and efforts to this volunteer project, we not only improved the physical appearance of our community but also strengthened our team bond over a shared mission for the betterment of others.
It's not just about selling beer; it's about being an active and responsible member of the communities we serve. Whether it's sponsoring local events, supporting charitable organizations, or volunteering our time, we are committed to making a positive impact beyond just our business operations.
We encourage everyone to find ways, big or small, to give back to their communities. Together, we can create a brighter future for all - a future with more cheers. 🍻

🎉 Giving back to the community is everything! 🙌
This past weekend, my friends Nevaeh, Jack Mauldin and I had the incredible opportunity to volunteer at City of Greeley Oktobrewfest 🍻. It was an amazing experience to give back, connect with the local community, and have a blast doing it!
Volunteering not only strengthens our ties to the community but also helps build relationships and develop important skills that translate into the business world.
