Have you ever stopped to consider what your company truly stands for? When we sat down to define our core values at Allegiance Title, my team was adamant about one in particular: integrity. I said integrity should be a baseline, not a value. You can’t be a title company without integrity. But they insisted on documenting our commitment to this value. To our team, it was about doing the right thing. Even if we don’t get the business. Even if we have to give someone bad news. Even if it creates more work. It was important to them that they could trust in that integrity from the top down. I used to have customers come in and say: “Dawn, I’m bringing you this challenging transaction because I know you will do it right.” And sometimes I would just want to say: “Sure, but will you give me some of your easy ones for once?” No such luck! Hard as it was at times, building our reputation for doing the right thing would pay off. When I restarted my business in 2009, many title underwriters had recently dropped title agents who didn’t always do it right, who skipped corners. But as soon as I opened my doors, those same underwriters were eager to work with us. In fact, 10 underwriters wanted to partner with us without even requiring a minimum volume of business. That spoke volumes to the integrity lived out by my team. I'm so proud of my team for insisting on integrity as a core value. They understood, perhaps better than I did, how much it would matter to formally unite under that promise. They were right.

We’ve said this before, but it is worth mentioning again: Your underwriter is your best friend, if you allow them to be. This means that the more time you put into submissions for your underwriter, the more they’re going to be able to leverage that account for the best price and coverage possible. Sure, you’re busy and it’s sometimes difficult to see that extra work as the best use of your time when you could be out and about talking to new clients, but it absolutely is the best use of your time. It allows you to prove to everyone around you that you have a preeminent attention to detail and are willing to do whatever necessary to take care of your accounts. It is your reputation. Always take the time to make your underwriter’s job a little easier, because when you do, they will make your job easier and your client happier. And that will pay dividends. My favorite thing about my job? collaboration I work for Key Title, an Independent Agent for Investors Title. We are not managed by corporate, but we do have access to their legal team and our customers are backed by the full weight of corporate. We support them, and they support us. Sometimes I walk into a new customer firm, and I'm asked, "So how does it work, the relationship between Key Title and Investors?" It works like this. Do you like and use Investors Title already? Great! Keep using them. I'm not here to take business away from my underwriter. We exist and operate as an Independent Agent of Investors because not all customers are alike. They have different personalities. They need different things. And having choices is a good thing. It keeps us pushing, striving, working harder for that customer experience. It's what drives us all. And customers should be able to shop around for the service provider that fits THEM best. No single provider fits everyone. And THAT'S why having a choice is critical to success.
