Yesterday I spoke about PE firms facing issues with their large institutional investors. So where should they turn? Apparently the answer is the so-called “suburban rich.” Blackstone has announced its first fund aimed at rich individuals has raised $1.2 billions so far (and will remain open for more investments). And the pricing is different than the traditional 2 and 20 (more like 1.25 and 12.5 as long as a 5% return is acheived. I imagine the total universe of cash available to PE firms from this route is less than the big institutional investors, (and the investments the fund will make sound smaller) but still an interesting development. https://lnkd.in/e7-nKqAA

In a remarkable development for alternative investment firms, Blackstone Inc. has successfully raised $1.3 billion for its pioneering private equity fund, BXPE, aimed at affluent individuals. This fund marks a significant shift in Blackstone's strategy, as it traditionally focused on institutional investors. With a minimum investment threshold of $5 million, BXPE is uniquely positioned to cater to the world's 'mini-millionaires', a segment that's growing rapidly. As traditional sources of institutional money begin to plateau, Blackstone, along with competitors like KKR & Co. Inc. and Apollo Global Management, Inc. Global Management Inc., is exploring new avenues of funding. This initiative challenges the conventional financial wisdom, promoting private equity as a viable alternative to standard stocks, bonds, and index funds, albeit with a caveat of higher fees and limited liquidity. The launch of BXPE wasn't without its challenges. Initially planned for early 2023, market uncertainties and investor hesitations led to a strategic delay. This cautious approach reflects Blackstone's learning from its real estate fund, BREIT, which faced redemption limitations amid market volatility. With BXPE, Blackstone is offering a blend of potential high returns and liquidity, albeit with certain restrictions. The success of BXPE and its ability to attract continuous funding will be a critical test for the private equity sector's expansion into the domain of individual investors.
