We recently spoke to an Audit Partner at a Top 10 firm who we helped to make a move out of Big 4 around 12 months ago. We caught up with them to discuss how the move has gone and reflect on their first year in the new role. Whilst the Big 4 Partner pay has increased; they are mostly set on consolidation, not winning new work and actually the big concern is their attrition rates... In contrast 👉 BDO Partner pay has fallen due to heavy investment in the audit business - whilst still turning down a lot of work, it seems they have added 300+ auditors in 2023, have increased packages to retain staff and are still growing the teams to get set for future growth 🚀 We have seen far less recruitment happening within the Big 4 but it has been non-stop for the challenger firms since the start of 2021 as they add listed clients to their portfolio 📈 Is this a sign we will see a lot more work coming out of the Big 4 and into not only BDO, but the rest of the challenger firms in the coming years? At SkyWater Search Partners Chicago we work with a variety of management consulting firms that have teams focused on M&A advisory from an accounting and finance perspective and have been keeping close with them as they navigate a sparser deals ecosystem when compared to the last few years. Corroborated by both PwC's Midyear Report (linked below) and our clients, 2023 has been a continuation of 2022's deal decline (~30% YOY). However, given the slowdown in interest rate hikes and an uptick in creative deal approaches (all-equity deals, for example), a willingness to diversify deal structure and the hope for cheaper debt in the next year has our clients feeling optimistic about transaction volume for Q4 and 2024. That said, these same clients CONTINUE to hire for in-seat roles. I just placed a strategic finance associate with a long-time M&A advisory client who is also building out a brand new accounting advisory practice, and we have several other shops telling us that "we still need more people" for their in-seat consulting teams. The fact of the matter is that as long as talent remains tight, regardless of deal-flow, these in-seat consulting teams will continue to have a full pipeline of companies who need their services because accounting and finance talent is so sparse.
