Nexus Analytics & Research is thrilled to learn that Barbican Centre has received funding for the first phase of the Barbican Renewal Programme. Working with our friends at MARK Placemaking we prepared the demographic and socio-economic baseline to understand the food & beverage appeal of the cultural icon. This helped underpin the business case and place-making efforts of the excellent Barbican Renewal Team. Put simply, we helped with defining who visits, why they visit, and how can we further broaden appeal…. A real feel-good project! We are delighted to hear that Colchester’s Balkerne Water Tower has secured an £8m grant from the The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Create have been providing multidisciplinary technical services and specialist advice as part of a project team led by Purcell. A planning application was submitted in October with a decision due early this year. The Grade II-listed structure is the largest Victorian municipal water tower in England. 👷 Reviving Empty Spaces in Scotland’s Towns 🏘️ Next week, the Scotland’s Towns Conference in Perth will highlight the inspiring work underway to transform vacant and derelict buildings across Perth and Kinross. From creating affordable housing and community spaces, to reviving iconic sites like Perth Museum, the Vacant and Eyesore Property Taskforce is leading the way in turning eyesores into assets. These projects are improving local economies, boosting community pride, and showing what’s possible when councils, businesses, and communities work together. At the conference, Councillor Grant Laing and Tom Arthur MSP will highlight how these initiatives can serve as a model for inspiring nationwide action. The Metro Atlanta Chamber put revitalizing downtown, improving public safety and ending homelessness in the city’s core at the top of its agenda in 2025 as downtown sees not only a historic wave of investment but also megawatt events that will shine international spotlights on Georgia’s capital city. The call to support revitalizing downtown into a vibrant, 24-hour community with ample housing comes as Atlanta will play host to the college football national championship in January, World Cup matches in 2026 and several other marquee events in the next five years. The chamber held its 165th annual meeting Thursday at the Georgia Freight Depot, the oldest building in downtown, where the region’s business leaders gathered to discuss key priorities within this plan, which included addressing the city’s unsheltered population and boosting the housing supply. A quick nip around the corner from the MH&A offices in Farringdon is all it takes to have a quick glimpse of the barriers between the Government and its key priority - growth. Despite being in situ since 1892, The Sekforde is threatened by closure with Islington Council planning to cut its capacity due to resident complaints. The residents in question (who have not been in situ since 1892) have moved in next to a pub in central London, have found that EC1 sadly isn't the quietest corner of the city. The key point here is the balance of power in the planning system. The veto always seems to win. The officer workers, tourists, locals and other members of the public who benefit from the pub's services are not equally represented in the process as those residents adversely effected. Pubs are just the thin edge of a very wide wedge, which has housing, transport, and infrastructure at its less trivial end. Growth is going to be hard to come by if planning continues to prioritise not only stasis, but in this case, backwards steps. https://lnkd.in/gtfsjtSG

Always fun and just a bit out of my comfort zone! Thanks Steve Austin and Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) for hosting Jackson Hills and I this morning and for airing our team’s #YIFBY Yes in Faith’s Back Yard idea. YIFBY is a collaboration between YIMBY Qld, QShelter, #faithbasedgroups and other #notforprofits to unlock a potential pipeline of #gentledensity housing (eg. benevolent BTR). YIFBY will create: • low scale housing on underutilised community purpose land • remove red tape and • have far reaching benefits. Social and affordable housing is an important community purpose, and must be unlocked ‘In Faith’s Back Yard’ if we’re serious about responding to the housing crisis. It’s a straight forward decision. If you also say YES, I encourage you to lodge a submission by 21 May 2024 about the Housing Availability and Affordability (Planning and Other Legislation) Amendment Bill 2023.
