Asking individuals, corporations, foundations, or any other entity for donations is an interesting proposition. In many ways, we compete with other nonprofits in our community for contributions, but when all is said and done, we are working for the same goal: relieve the suffering and burden of loved ones who need it and help get folks back on a path to living a happy, productive life. At VOA Utah, our focus is: + Provide emergency shelter for women and youth ages 15-22. + Move unhoused individuals out of shelters and into sustainable housing. + Provide detoxification services to our most vulnerable populations and set them up with continued rehabilitation services. + Provide mental health counseling for anybody who needs it. + Scour our public spaces, create relationships with Uthans living on the streets, and connect them with services — ours or anybody else's — so they can get the help they need. + Provide comprehensive wrap-around services for thousands of Utahns that in many cases, are immediate band-aids but that always center on sustained recovery. "Where on the field is the $1 I'm paying for soda?" A famous scene from Moneyball where newly acquired DH David Justice asks why General Manager Billy Beane charges for soda in the club house. Jonah Hill's fictionalized character Peter Brand replies that "Billy likes to keep the money on the field" While the ownership of the soon to be Las Vegas A's is notoriously stingy, this scene was actually total creative liberty but it made a point that is relatable to many who work in the nonprofit world. When staff at nonprofits are forced to work with broken chairs, slow computers, and chronic understaffing, these things don't actually put more money into the program. They're symbolic sacrafices to demonstrate commitment to fans (donors) and more often than not management. There's a reason professional sports teams don't try and save money by having their players workout at local High School gyms. The reputational damage would make it more difficult to recruit players. What do we think it does to employee recruitment and retention in the nonprofit sector when the industry is defined by symbolic (and sometimes quite literal) vows of poverty? Great missions require great people and resources that allow them to perform at their best. Your soda money doesn't end up back on the field but it can pull money off of it if your badge of honor sacrafices conribute to employee turnover.

Day 46 of 100 Days of Games of Chance in Kenya. The CSR from Games of Chance gave rise to the Non Governmental Organisation Movement in Kenya. Today’s article is from July 25th 1967. It talks about how the general public has ‘hardened’ to charity/contributions because of being bombarded by requests for cash contributions in the streets, restaurants, bus stops, offices and public spaces of major towns in the country. The article celebrates the structure of the Kenya Charity Sweepstakes and how the Kenya Government had formed the Kenya National Council for Social Services, which required all charitable bodies to register to it and which ensured there was no duplication of charities. Kenya Charity Sweepstakes in offering lotteries for purposes of funding charities - in my opinion - created an entire industry that we now know as Non Governmental Organisations who are primarily charity/not for profit and are governed by Non Governmental Organisations ( NGO) Board of Kenya. https://lnkd.in/dvqd5e5m

A summary: Notes from February 2024 Meeting of League of the Descendants of the Enslaved at Mount Vernon (The League)   Documentary titled "Enjoy Your Visit?" In our February general meeting of League members, a documentary titled "Enjoy Your Visit?" was discussed, aiming to explore tensions at Mount Vernon over slavery and its representation. The documentary’s producer, Merle Augustin and Emmy award winning writer / director Erin Cramer were introduced to members. Funding for the project is being sought through various means, including in-kind contributions, grants from foundations, and companies in the US and Europe. The film aims to raise awareness of the true history of the enslaved at Mount Vernon and the challenges faced by their ancestors.   Engaging with historical preservation groups Second, Shawn Halifax, Executive Director of Woodlawn and Pope-Leighey House provided an update on discussions with historical preservation groups to gain support for organizations representing the enslaved and their communities. It was agreed to work together to support the League and other groups, with a scheduled first meeting to build trust and relationships.   Chairman’s update Additionally, I provided an update on the submission of a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to Mount Vernon for consideration and input, as well as an invitation for League members to participate in a panel at the George Washington Training Institute in July 2024. An update on the 501(c)3 non-profit status was also shared.   Launch of League Website Finally, the League's website (https://lnkd.in/dwkRr7E6) was demonstrated and launched, providing a platform for members to share their families' content. What is the American Kratom Association? A: a non-profit organization that advocates for the protection and regulation of kratom, a plant-based substance commonly used for its stimulant and pain-relieving effects. The AKA works to protect consumer access to kratom, promote its safe use, and advocate for science-based regulation instead of outright bans. They often engage with lawmakers, provide education on kratom’s benefits and risks, and work to ensure that kratom is sold in a safe and uncontaminated form. #InternationalDayoftheAfricanChild: A Call from Chess in Slums Africa Today, as we celebrate International Day of the African Child, we reflect on the countless stories of triumph and transformation that we have witnessed through our champions. For every story we rewrite, there are millions of untold stories of children who do not yet know the possibilities that lie ahead. As we commemorate this day, let’s take a moment to remember those children and ask ourselves, “How can I make a change in my capacity?” You don’t have to wait until you have it all to make a difference. A first step can be as simple as volunteering your time, advocating for a cause you believe in within your network, or making a donation. A first step could be as powerful as believing in the inherent potential of every child, regardless of their current status, to become a champion.
