And rather than aiming for a "nice and attractive" flyer, strive for one that delivers a strong, impactful message concisely and effectively. Let's empower ourselves and each other by choosing language that accurately reflects the significance of our work. Let's break free from language habits that diminish our contributions. How important is team and organisation culture really? Some of you know it's my life's work to figure this out. I've just been reading the #TonyHsiehAward and it's resonating. I've spent years working to explain this so I thought I'd share it as clearly as I know how: I believe if you can change the way the world *works*, you can change the way the *world* works. I've been building progressive team cultures for 20 years and proved to myself it's a real strategy. I'm now building my own company to prove it's a solid foundation - and that it's better for both people and profit. I believe the meaning of work isn't to make money, that's the mechanics. The meaning of work is to make people. When people grow, an organisation can't help but flourish. I believe we can reimagine and rediscover a different relationship between humanity and work. One based not on extracting labour for compensation, but on generating energy that powers people, business and mission. It feels vulnerable putting this out there. This will be the 5th time I'm voting for Kamala Harris. She hails from California and I'm based in California. The last California-based presidential candidate was Ronald Reagan and before him, Nixon. It seems fitting that we bookend what was started during their administrations with what Harris' campaign calls A New Way Forward. The narrative we've seen unfold is what my mentor calls, Pain Pushes Until Vision Pulls. Pain, anger, fear over a long period of time changes us. A vision of what the U.S. could be and in turn a vision of what our workplaces can be when we are at our highest versions of ourselves is within grasp. The intersection of culture, language, and the election will continue to fill our physical and Slack halls for the next 2 months...and will continue afterward as well. While we still feel pain from the fear of the unknown, it matters how we show up right now. Angela R. Howard and I are collaborating to teach and talk about ways our workplace can be where we step into vision and learn communication skills that will help us navigate its culture as our highest and best version of ourselves.
