One critical advantage of New Urbanism is that it blends residential, commercial, and retail spaces within the same multi-family development. This approach fosters a strong sense of community, making it easier for residents to connect and engage with their local environment. Morris Square in Charleston is a prime example of how small-scale developers can successfully implement New Urbanism. Allison Ramsey Architects played a crucial role in this vibrant, mixed-use community, designing everything from single-family homes to large mixed-use buildings alongside townhouses, a duplex, and a quadruplex. For small-scale developers, the growing focus on multi-family housing within New Urbanism represents more than a passing trend. It marks a significant transformation in the way cities are planned and lived in. Urban Planners + Architects I’ve been increasingly focused on the interconnection between urban planning and architecture lately. While architecture is my specialty, urban planning serves as our context—an inseparable relationship that shapes our built environment. Although the division between architecture and urban planning often occurs for practical reasons, it frequently leads to a disconnect. This separation, while seemingly necessary, overlooks the essential relationships between architecture and the broader urban context. For instance, a significant issue with Modernist development in "developing" countries (I prefer the term "regressing countries") is that upscale residential and office towers rise starkly alongside slums. In developed nations like Canada, architects must collaborate closely with urban planners and developers to address not only this painful disparity between impoverished neighborhoods and opulent glass towers but also to devise innovative solutions that enhance connectivity within the urban fabric while minimizing the adverse effects of gentrification. I believe that it is entirely possible for developments to be both highly profitable and socially responsible, putting an end to this jarring break in our urban and social landscape. But we need a strong collaboration and a strong commitment to building better communities. #ISDArchitects #UrbanPlanning #Architecture #SustainableDesign #Community #HumanIntegration #Modernism #CityDevelopment #EquitableDevelopment #Torontoarchitects #Ontarioarchitects

📍 Moor Lane, Bolton. Step Places faced an extremely tight funding deadline for securing planning permission for the Moor Lane site, in part due to its significant strategic importance within the 2017 Bolton Town Centre Framework. A 'key intervention area' and not to mention a vital route for improving pedestrian movement across the town, the site was already of significant interest to local politicians, stakeholders and the community. On top of all that, half of the site lies within the Town Hall Conservation Area, and in the setting of two important listed buildings. Our challenge was therefore... 🏘️ Get the design absolutely right ⌛ Do so incredibly quickly Intrigued?
