"Marla Spindel, DC KinCare Alliance co-founder and executive director, said that community members most recently have inquired about adoption services. 'People have asked about how to file an adoption case, or they might want to know if they have been caring for a child since birth and the parents are not around, how to make that child feel like they are a permanent part of the family?' Due to these ongoing questions about #adoption from community members and their clients, earlier this year, DCKC launched PROJECT ADOPT, which will help clients through the adoption process." At FosterWiki we believe in action not just words, and 2024 has been no exception. While it's important to expose the flaws in children’s services and advocating for reform, there comes a point where talking must give way to action. Highlighting problems has been vital, but now it’s time for everyone to focus on solutions. This change requires a multi-pronged approach. We cannot rely solely on government policy reforms, these are only part of the answer. Many changes can start with us. It’s not always about increased funding; it’s about evolving unhelpful cultures, returning to the basics, and putting children and their carers at the centre, supported by a cohesive team of experts. This isn’t a call to action, it is action. Join us in 2025. Together, we are the change. Together, we are the revolution in children’s care. #childrenscare #frontline #wecare

One question we have been asked recently is, why the change? Our journey at Adopt4Life has been about building a community for parents and caregivers, regardless of how their families came together. Through community feedback, discussions with other organizations and learning from those with first hand lived experience, we've came to understand that our name, Adopt4Life, may unintentionally exclude some from feeling fully represented in our community, especially those who formed their families by other permanency journeys other than adoption. With the support of several communities, key stakeholders and more we knew it was time for a change! Our new identity better captures the diverse experiences of kinship, customary care, adoption, and families facing complex needs. Join us as we embrace this evolution, recognizing the interconnectedness of all family stories. #interwovenconnections #whythechange #adoptoin #kinship #customarycare

How do we balance adoption advocacy with honest support for prospective and current adoptive parents? There’s a huge need for new adoptive parents—over 100,000 children in the U.S. foster care system are waiting to be adopted. The rewards of adoption are life-changing: building a family, providing a loving home, and creating lifelong bonds. Because of the great need, many advocates don’t prepare new adoptive parents for the extreme challenges. When my wife and I began our adoption journey, the agencies we spoke with were overwhelmingly positive, but they didn’t always prepare us for the tough parts—the financial strain, the lengthy process, and the emotional toll. When challenges hit, we felt underprepared. And challenges do hit - depending on how you define it, 10-25% of adoption opportunities experience a disruption. Adoption is beautiful, but it’s also hard work. And that’s why it’s crucial to approach it with eyes wide open. Do your research, connect with experienced adoptive families, and be honest about your capabilities. If you’re considering adoption, prepare for both the joys and the difficulties—because both are real. What questions do you have about adoption? I’m happy to share what we’ve learned along the way.
