At the 2024 annual ASMBS conference in San Diego, we learned that there is an overwhelming need for post operative nutrition and mental health counseling 1-2 years after bariatric surgery and complications associated with lack of care. Surgeons and bariatric coordinators expressed frustration of not knowing where to send their patients for the help they need. During the most recent American Society For Metabolic And Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) in San Diego, we learned that recurring issues reported in surgical practices were diet and vitamin nonadherence, increased depression and suicidality, increased alcohol use, return of old eating behaviors and lack of support. This symptomatology is particularly prevalent in patients more than 1 year postop and closer to 2 years. The consistent message from surgeons and bariatric coordinators was frustration and lack of resources to refer patients to "get back on track" and maintain motivation to sustain a healthier lifestyle required for long-term success with metabolic & bariatric surgery.
