𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦, 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐬? One of today's biggest challenges in managing obesity, is facilitating long-lasting, behavioral changes. An area where all other gastric balloons fall short, and without which a patient’s achieved weight loss would not ultimately stick. Recognizing this, we set out to create a solution to address this issue. The Spatz3 adjustable gastric balloon offers a simple, two-pronged fix - adjustability enables a uniquely longer effective stay in a patient's stomach, allowing for long-term, behavioral shifts to take hold; while also helping to overcome balloon intolerance, ensuring a personalized approach. As doctors, it is critical that we broaden our focus beyond the numbers on the scale and support patients in shifting their habits towards positive, sustainable change. I strongly believe this approach has enabled our gastric balloon to achieve the highest success rates in the industry. I’ve been reluctant to post on here about Semaglutide since there has been a decent amount of negative connotations in the media about using it for weight loss. I have seen many social media posts by diabetics who are frustrated that we are utilizing this medication for weight loss and diabetic patients who need it, are unable to obtain it. I have seen posts by physical trainers and others that this is cheating, lazy, and other negative adjectives surrounding it. In a recent discussion with a brilliant man Dr. Tzvi Doron, DO and his recent post, about the benefits of GLP-1s with relation to cardiac health. As a former heart failure nurse and an active member of #AAHFN Tzvi shared a study that I wasn’t aware of that correlated the befits of Semaglutide and Heart failure. I know no one asked for my opinion. But here are my thoughts for Semaglutide for weight loss… I am all for it… within reason. Our clients at RxIV Infusions average a 8-10 pound weight loss. But we don’t suggest it as a long term treatment. In a society of instant gratification, #semaglutide should be geared to give someone that instant gratification while making lifestyle changes, such as diet and exercise. At the end of the day there is a lot of unknown. But we do know, the benefits look to outweigh (pun intended) the risk. Obesity has been a significant epidemic for as long as I can remember. We may finally be on the right track.

Reflecting on another great moment from #ACSM24 sharing the stage with Caroline Apovian and John Jakicic to discuss the role of exercise for patients taking contemporary #obesity medications. What a session! 💪 Dr. Apovian started by providing the audience with a foundation on the indications, mechanisms, and medical management of nutrient-stimulated hormone therapies along with background on what the appropriate #comprehensivecare should look like for patients with obesity. 💪 Dr. Jakicic dove deep into what we know and honestly don't yet know about the role of exercise when taking contemporary obesity medications. He also discussed #bodycomposition and reminded the audience that #musclemass is not the same as #leanmass - a hot topic as many know. 💪 I had the pleasure of following these 2 giants in the field of obesity, with a talk discussing our current bio-behavior research strategy followed by recommendations around #personcentered, not only #methodcentered work for #exerciseprofessionals and #researchers to apply. While we must research the appropriate doses and modes of exercise therapy, the experience for the person living with obesity must remain in the center of every exercise program that we write.
