That time I met Gary Vaynerchuk…

Earlier this week, I got to attend Arlan Hamilton’s Your First Million Live, thanks to being a part of the Backstage Capital Catalyst Program to learn more about venture capital and investing.
Gary Vee shared so many insights around the importance of humility and kindness, social media as a meritocracy (these platforms are free!), and branding and attention — but his garage sale flips are what I originally connected with.
I have so many memories of going to garage sales with my dad as a kid before he passed away when I was 9. One of the best lessons I learned from my dad was to see the value in everything, and I’ve brought that to how I see and want to build up the disability community.
We are valuable simply because we exist.
And many years later, in the early days of relaunching Diversability®, while it started as a side hustle, I found some creative ways to make some extra money to see if I could make this “entrepreneurship thing” work.
I sold jewelry through a direct sales company.
I used Airbnb to rent out my apartment.
I’d flip furniture I got on Craigslist. I had a corner of my apartment with the furniture, and my mom asked me to stop doing that 🤷🏻♀️
These are risks that not everyone can take (acknowledging my own privilege here), which is why once Diversability® started making some money, we reinvested it in back into our community by hiring disabled people, paying disabled speakers, and curating paid and visibility opportunities for our disabled community members.
So back to meeting Gary Vee. I didn’t say any of this when I saw him, and we had a good laugh when I mentioned that we had a mutual friend named Gary Vee because I forgot what to say 🤣
