Scotch whisky: "Extraordinary" 74-year-old malt goes on sale Elgin-based Gordon & MacPhail has added an "extraordinary" 74-year-old whisky valued at £35,000 per bottle to its Private Collection range. Gordon & MacPhail 1949 from Glenlivet Distillery was laid down in a refill Sherry butt on New Year’s Day 1949 and bottled on March 6, 2023. Retaining a cask strength of 49.3%, only 192 bottles of the ultra-rare whisky are available for sale. Having been aged for more than seven decades, it is among one of the oldest Glenlivet released by Gordon & MacPhail. It is also the company’s last ever 1949 cask from Glenlivet Distillery. “To find a whisky of this age is absolutely extraordinary," whisky writer Dave Broom said. "What comes across immediately is the fruit - there’s richness and there’s depth. You have this wonderful interplay of distillery character, of oak and oxygen. It’s a gift that keeps on giving. #investment #opportunity #whiskycollection #whiskylover #whiskybarrel #whiskycask #invest #investor #Investing #investors #assets #asset #assetmanagement #assetprotection #whisky #whiskylife #scotland #scottish #scottishbusiness https://lnkd.in/gBq4Y7PY

The event was held in Lagos and dignitaries in attendance gave testimonies of the product and its legacy. Crafted in 1940 and notably the oldest expression of The Macallan brand, The Reach embodies ingenuity and unmistakable strength of character. Its very existence is a testament to the care and commitment to uncompromised excellence that has driven The Macallan since it was founded in 1824. It also pays tribute to those who strived amid great adversity to resume distilling. Asks Mark Kent When George Osborne cut the duty on spirits in 2015, he did so at a time when the OBR predicted the move would cost the Treasury, but it didn’t. It brought in more money. It boosted our industry’s investment, and it delivered more cash to the Chancellor. He wasn’t the first Chancellor to cut duty, but he was only the third. Anthony Barber did it in 1973 while the inimitable Ken Clarke did it twice – in 1995 and 1996. Other Chancellors have of course frozen duty, but surprisingly few have gone that one step further. From Dusty Shelf to Treasure Trove: The £10,000 Valuation of a Macallan 1926 Whisky Case on Antiques Roadshow Imagine stumbling upon an old display case at a garage sale, paying a modest sum for it, only to discover it once cradled one of the world's rarest and most expensive whiskies. This is not a fanciful tale but the reality for one Antiques Roadshow guest, whose £200 investment in a piece of whisky history was appraised at a staggering £10,000. The case, designed exclusively for a 1926 Macallan whisky bottle, underscores the unpredictable and thrilling world of antique collecting, where the value of seemingly mundane objects can astonish and delight. A Rare Find The display case in question was no ordinary container. Crafted for the Macallan 1926, a whisky of legendary status among collectors, it was one of only 24 produced. The whisky itself, from cask number 263, has reached astronomical figures at auction, including a record-breaking sale of £2.1 million at Sotheby's. Aged for 60 years in sherry casks and bottled in 1986, the 1926 Macallan is not just a beverage but a piece of history. The involvement of artists Valerio Adami and Sir Peter Blake in designing the labels for these bottles further elevates their status, blending the worlds of art and spirits into a concoction of high value and desirability. Beam Suntory celebrates Auchentoshan history with Taiwan-exclusive whisky To celebrate 200 years since its establishment in 1823 Beam Suntory-owned Lowland distillery Auchentoshan has released a 24-year-old single malt in partnership with Ever Rich Duty Free. The 24-year-old bottling is available exclusively at Taiwan duty-free stores, with the retailer allocated 774 bottles at a recommended retail price of US$270. Unlike many Scottish distillers Auchentoshan uses a triple distillation process; an extended maturation process that it says produces a fresh, fruity flavour profile for easy drinking. Susan Williamson, Distillery Manager at Auchentoshan, commented: “We have joined a rare club of distilleries to reach their third century and it’s a testament to the quality and versatility of our whisky that the horizon looks so bright. “We couldn’t let such a big birthday pass us by without bottling something special, so this 24 year old is a nod to the past whilst raising a glass to the future.” Bottled at 43% alcohol by volume (ABV), the tasting notes for the whisky centre around candied citrus peel, creamy vanilla, moist raisins, and chocolate-coated almonds. The aroma is mimetic of heavy fruit focus, comprising mint leaves, menthol, beeswax, green grapes, autumnal and citrus fruit. Most valuable Scotch whisky category exports The latest data from the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) showed a decrease on 2022 exports in 2023 in both volume and value. The industry has described 2022 as a ‘bumper’ year for exports, as global markets reopened following pandemic lockdowns – including global travel retail. Asia Pacific continued to be Scotch whisky’s largest regional market by value in 2023, with record value exports to China – up by 165% compared with 2019. The SWA cited premiumisation as a key driver in the region, with single malt continuing to grow in popularity among consumers. Earlier this week, we counted down the 10 biggest Scotch whisky export markets by volume and value, as shared by the SWA. But when it comes to whisky styles, which were the biggest value exports last year? The Macallan and Michelle Lucking Unveil Art-Infused Whisky Celebrating the River Spey The Macallan Home Collection, River Spey is a limited edition whisky inspired by the River Spey and its natural beauty. Collaborating with artist Michelle Lucking, this release offers rich flavors of sultana, butterscotch, and chocolate, combined with evocative watercolor artwork capturing the serene landscape of the river. Available at The Macallan Estate Boutique and selected Global Travel Retail Boutiques for $275. Inspiration Flowing from the River Spey The Macallan Home Collection, River Spey, is more than just a whisky; it's a celebration of the natural beauty and inspiration drawn from the River Spey, which meanders through The Macallan Estate. This special edition is a reflection of the distillery's profound connection with its surroundings, from the water that feeds its whisky to the landscapes that inspire its aesthetic. Crafted from select European and American oak sherry seasoned casks, the whisky presents a rich amber hue, embodying the natural colors of the river in winter as depicted in Lucking's artwork. Aromas of raisins, treacle sponge, and fruit lead to a palate rich with sultana, butterscotch, and chocolate, culminating in a finish marked by toasted oak spice. #investment #opportunity #whiskycollection #whiskylover #whiskybarrel #whiskycask #invest #investor #Investing #investors #assets #asset #assetmanagement #assetprotection #whisky #whiskylife #scotland https://lnkd.in/gN_XvEnJ

Single malt breaks £2bn barrier despite overall Scotch sales dip Exports of single malt smashed through the £2bn mark for the first time last year [2023] thanks to a thirst for premium spirits in emerging markets in the Far East, despite a dip in overall sales of Scotch whisky around the world. New figures from the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) revealed that exports fell by 9.5% to £5.6bn, as demand from shops and bars eased following post-pandemic restocking. Sales remained 14% higher than 2019’s pre-pandemic level, despite what the SWA called ‘a global cost of living crisis’. Overall, the numbers showed the continuing long-term trend towards ‘premiumisation’, with Scotch fans swapping cheaper blends for more expensive malts. The United States remained the biggest market for Scotch whisky by value, despite sales decreasing by 7% to £978m, followed by France, which dipped by 3% to £474m, and Singapore – a key distribution hub for the wider Asia-Pacific region – which climbed by 19% to £378m. #investment #opportunity #whiskycollection #whiskylover #whiskybarrel #whiskycask #invest #investor #Investing #investors #assets #asset #assetmanagement #assetprotection #whisky #whiskylife #scotland https://lnkd.in/g4pNQ22v

Whisky takes a shot at China's baijiu-dominated market The Lunar New Year is traditionally a time for gathering with family and friends to eat and drink. And for hundreds of years, the drink of choice in China for these celebrations has been baijiu - a clear spirit made with fermented grains which packs a potent punch. Baijiu is also often drunk straight and at social events such as weddings and birthdays. Its Alcohol-By-Volume (ABV) can top 60% - in comparison spirits like scotch whisky and tequila typically have an ABV of around 40%. "Baijiu certainly still has its place in Chinese liquor consumption, even among young consumers," says Allison Malmsten, public research director at Daxue Consulting. It accounts for well over 90% of China's spirits sales, with annual sales of around $160bn (£127bn). However, in recent times drinks from abroad have been growing in popularity in what is the world's biggest spirits market. #investment #opportunity #whiskycollection #whiskylover #whiskybarrel #whiskycask #invest #investor #Investing #investors #assets #asset #assetmanagement #assetprotection #whisky #whiskylife #scotland https://lnkd.in/gEDry8ff
