Pedro Martinez recent op-ed is a powerful reminder that true leadership in education means making difficult choices with students at the center of every decision. Leading with a student-first mindset ensures that every strategy and action ultimately benefits those who matter most: the students. As a former CPS employee, his words resonated deeply with me, particularly this quote: “I am the seventh CPS CEO in the past decade. A leadership change is extraordinarily disruptive to any school system, generating a domino effect of change among key positions that can stall progress and diminish opportunities for students.” Having personally experienced the significant disruptions caused by leadership changes during my time at CPS, I saw firsthand how these shifts trickled down into the classroom, impacting students, teachers, and the distribution of resources. Each transition led to a loss of institutional knowledge, stalling progress and directly affecting the opportunities students deserved. I commend him for his resolve in the face of adversity, his commitment to CPS, and, most importantly, his unwavering focus on a student-first mission. As San Antonio continues to grow at an incredible pace, we must not overlook the challenges within our education system. Through my participation in the Master Leadership Program Class of 21, I’ve had the opportunity to gain deeper exposure to the struggles faced by students, parents, and educators alike. The gaps in resources and support are real, and we have to do better. Our city’s future success depends on how well we address these issues. Programs like St. Philip’s College Culinary Arts students and restaurant, and Southwest Legacy High School’s arts-focused initiatives show how investing in education can shape the future workforce and elevate our community. But we need more. We must ensure that students are not only equipped to succeed in high school and college but also prepared for careers beyond. To continue thriving as one of the fastest-growing cities, public education must be a priority for our elected officials from school trustees to state representatives and senators. It’s essential that we vote for leaders who are committed to supporting students, educators, and parents. Only then can we truly build a future where every student has the opportunity to succeed beyond the classroom. We know how important leadership is. It’s not just the research that tells us this. It’s the stories and experiences. A good leader can make a school feel palpable with energy. They celebrate. They challenge. They inspire. They change communities. We have the awesome power to transform generations. (Insert body chills) But it starts with leadership. It starts with someone who says “I’ll answer the call” or “I’ll stand in the gap.” Such a move is a brave and courageous act. And we desperately need courage right now. If you haven’t heard, Tulsa Public Schools is teaming up with New Leaders and Clark Atlanta University to offer the National Aspiring Leaders Fellowship. This program has a track record of success in developing urban principals - who know what it looks like to answer that call. The mission is to ensure that we have leadership that represent our student population. We need people to step up. So we are eliminating all financial barriers.
