🇳🇬 Enhancing the capacity of humanitarian partners in information management 📊 to drive impactful aid services in #Nigeria. In the current project cycle, started in October 2023, iMMAP Inc. Nigeria has conducted 5 thematic advanced training sessions, benefitting 73 #humanitarian partner staff from key organizations like ORB International, Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC in Adamawa and Borno), Première Urgence Internationale (PUI), and Grassroot Initiative for Strengthening Community Resilience (GISCOR). Through customized training targeted for M&E and IM staff, we have equipped these professionals with enhanced capabilities in #datavisualization and #analysis, using specialized IM tools and overall #datamanagement. #WithLearningComesChange Over the years, there have been great achievements in humanitarian learning, and ongoing frustrations. ALNAP has been taking stock of what we have learned about learning itself and the steps needed to build on successes and rise to challenges. Today is the big #DayForLearning on this year’s extra day, ALNAP is encouraging humanitarians everywhere to take some time out of their busy schedules to: read a report, article or resource they’ve been meaning to get to for ages. complete an online training module. explore an important area of their work in more depth and detail. or simply take a step back for some much needed – and long overdue – reflection. Will you be taking part? Share your plans to inspire others! There's still time to join ALNAP on this journey to transform humanitarian learning. Visit alnap.org to find out how to get involved. #UnlockLearning

“As local as possible and as international as necessary.” Coming back from the #EHF2024 I was incredibly inspired by DG ECHO’s strong committment to localisation as well as the incredible work being done in the humanitarian sector, including hearing from NEAR (Network for Empowered Aid Response) emphasizing that local actors should not only design humanitarian response but receive the funding required to support them: on average they receive just 5% of funds exacerbating the power imbalance ⚠️ Johanniter International Assistance is supporting localisation efforts globally. 🌍 Specifically in Kenya, JIA is collaborating with local actors such as RACIDA, MID-P and Saint John’s Ambulance, and has identified the following lessons based on our engagement: 📌strengthening operational capacities of local actors is key for increased self sufficiency 📌donor funding for local staff and internal capacity training is just as valuable as direct programme funding to ensure operational efficiency 📌recognizing the importance of two way learning between INGO and NNGO as well as awareness of power imbalances is key to ensure more equal participation in decision making process by local partners Please find Johanniter International Assistance case study funded by DG ECHO here: https://lnkd.in/e5Q99KmN Yesani Kapanda #localisation #equitablepartnerships #powerbalance

What is the meaning of the term "HDP-Nexus"? In our line of work, you might've heard of the three areas of: ➡️ Humanitarian Aid (Immediate relief such as food, water, and medical support to save lives in emergencies), ➡️Development Cooperation: (Long-term projects like building schools and hospitals to enable economic and social growth) and ➡️Peace Work (Initiatives to promote social cohesion and peaceful coexistence). At Malteser International, we strive to take all three components into account in our work. This is because we believe that humanitarian aid, development cooperation and peacebuilding can only create lasting solutions for crisis-affected regions if they go hand in hand. This is the meaning of the "Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus" or "HDP-Nexus" for short. Weaving these threads together leads to a more sustainable change for good, paving the way for a hopeful future. #MalteserInternational #HDPNexus #BuildingResilience #SustainableFuture #PeaceAndDevelopment #HumanitarianAid

I couldn’t agree more. L & D is ever more essential today in the humanitarian sector and unfortunately commonly overlooked and not seen as a priority because people are too busy or don’t have time to learn or budget to invest. I see more and more that we need L & D approaches that are effective in hard and especially soft skills for us to help professionals become the best version of themselves and consequently do their work in a more efficient and impactful way.
There were great insights into the role of L&D in the future of humanitarian response from our panellists at the HNPW session this morning. Here are a few of my favourites (with all credit to panellists Gloria Miranda Ángel, Juliet Parker, Sophie Nyokabi & Zeynep M. Sanduvac): · With the increasing frequency of crises, mindsets need to shift from response, to preparedness. We need to make the case to donors that investing in humanitarian skills and learning in advance is central to better humanitarian response, as well as improving cost-effectiveness · We need to understand how leaders access the learning they need in the early days of a response. Evidence suggests that humanitarian leaders reach out to their close network, who are trusted and able to provide advice on demand. Therefore, an important factor in humanitarian learning is the building of strong networks including a wide range of expertise, that facilitate immediate collaboration in a crisis. · There is a need to support preparedness through the establishment of new learning spaces, such as regional, national and community-level learning hubs. Mobile and other technology can support in connecting these and providing learning resources, but the importance of human relationships must not be underestimated · Some great examples were shared in terms of how, practically, centralised tools such as the Core Humanitarian Standard can be made applicable to specific contexts through the learning process. Panellists also highlighted the importance of establishing a shared language and terminology (including the irony that ‘localisation’ does not translate well into other languages…) Thanks so much also to Emmanuelle (Em) Lacroix, Genevieve Cyvoct, Anna Lear and everyone else involved, and to CHS Alliance for organising.
