CEO of Wisnio | Talent data for Private Equity, Venture Capital, and Executive Search (we're hiring)

We hear from our Private Equity clients that the CFO role is the most difficult hire (aside from the CEO) for their portfolio companies. Partly because there simply are not enough CFOs with prior PE experience. But also because PE investors see the role of the CFO as much broader than most CFOs do. To help with that, team Wisnio looked at the data and designed a short hiring scorecard and evaluation guide for a PE-backed business CFO. Top 3 key requirements: 1️⃣ Successful track record in PE 2️⃣ Exit strategy & valuation mastery 3️⃣ Operational efficiency leadership Top 3 leadership competencies: 1️⃣ Strategic Thinking 2️⃣ Ensuring accountability 3️⃣ Business Acumen 📝 Link to the full list and practical evaluation scorecard is in the comments. _____ Private Equity talent leaders in my network - is there anything we missed? #privateequity #executivesearch #talentanalytics

Interesting, Alo.... but I would invert the order of the 3 key requirements. After all, every CFO with prior PE experience began without any earlier in their career and I doubt that 'rising generation' CFOs are less smart and adaptable than the generation ahead of them. So, I think the key skill skill to identify and measure is adaptability from corporate to PE-style performance priorities. Of course, that's the hardest to guage because it is qualitative in the absence of a prior quantative scorecard.

Thank you for sharing. I would really doubt strategic thinking requirements for PE-backed businesses as the strategic component is maintained at the PE-level. What could be important here is rather ability to achieve short and mid-term financial targets through cost-cutting. Depends on the business segment and other factors, though.
