In honor of "Military Child Appreciation Month", I had planned to share resources and services throughout the month in support of this special population. First up, TRIO-Veterans Student Support Services, Pensacola State College. Did you know that Trio offers special supportive services for first generation college students, low-income families, and for those with disabilities? I know these aren't specific to military children BUT many parents are so concerned about splitting up their GI Bill, they don't consider other education options. ✅ Some service members never receive their degree, making military children potentially the first in their family. ✅ For some agencies, military income doesn't always count towards income, won't count food/housing, resulting in meeting a "low income" status. ✅ Military children aren't exempt from disabilities and may qualify for the services if they need special accommodations. Geo-baching represents a choice that military families make to live apart, because that is the only way (for most) for military spouses, primarily wives, to pursue a #career The #military offers a lot, in terms of #pride , #wellbeing , it is a way to lead #life , however, in India particularly, not much has been said or done when it comes to #financialwellbeing of #militarywives There is dearth of research and so I might not have numbers to support my #thoughts at this point, but as a part of this cohort, I have lived these #challenges myself. So what is the ask from the larger ecosystem? ✨ Do we consider this small community to be a #functional #resource group? ✨ if yes, then do we have organisational #policies to include them? ✨ if not, have we thought over ways to include them? And how would that look? ✨ Do we have #flexibleroles to match their unique #challenges? The list is never ending, but as a starter, let’s ponder over these. April is all about celebrating the Month of the Military Child, a time when we honor the incredible resilience and sacrifices of military kids around the world. These amazing kids, whether they're part of active duty military families, Reserves, or the National Guard, face some real unique challenges. Moving around a lot is a big part of military life, which can really shake up a kid's social life, education, and sense of stability. It can make it tough to make long-lasting friendships and can even mess with their school work. When a parent goes off on deployment, it's really tough emotionally for the kids left behind. They might feel super anxious, sad, and scared about their parent's safety. This can sometimes lead to changes in their behavior or make it hard to concentrate in school. Growing up in a military family means living a pretty unique lifestyle. There are strict routines, lots of moving, and you're always around military stuff. While it can make kids pretty tough, independent, and able to roll with the punches, it can also make it tricky to figure out where they fit in between the military and civilian worlds. So, it's super important to recognize and take care of the special needs of military kids. Having support at home, in school, and in the community is key to helping them feel like they belong and understand their experiences. Let's make sure we're there for them every step of the way!
