Happy International Women’s Day!! Time to celebrate and reflect on the amazing women not only in the insurance industry but also in my new hobby ultra running. Some facts: - The Covid pandemic has caused a 10% drop in female participation across running events of all distances - 16% of entries to ultra marathons are women, compared to a 50/50 split for 5k events - Women are great at ultra marathons! with the gender performance gap for marathons being between 12-15%, but for ultra’s it drops to 6-8% So why aren’t we turning up? - Time! Women take on a lot more of the household responsibilities, meaning we can run a 5k but not train for longer distances - Confidence! Women suffer from a lack of confidence in sport, meaning we doubt we can do the longer distance. - Safe! Women don’t feel safe running (especially in the dark or different destinations), I guarantee every woman runner has experienced that feeling or had an incident occur. My goal for 2024! To be the woman who shows up and represents us in a sport we can absolutely dominate…

🌟 With the Olympic Games having just ended Sunday, we’re reminded of the incredible power of determination, resilience, and breaking boundaries. Every time a female athlete stepped onto the Olympic stage, she wasn’t just competing for a medal—she was shattering glass ceilings and redefining what women can achieve. As female entrepreneurs and professionals, we embody this same spirit. The drive to push boundaries and overcome challenges fuels our journeys, even when the odds seem stacked against us. Let me share a personal story: when I first tried snowboarding, I couldn’t even stand up. The board wasn’t right for me—it was too large because I hadn’t chosen it myself. The second time, I picked the board, but I still struggled. I couldn’t make a curve and ended up walking down the mountain because, as it turns out, I’m “Goofy” and had the wrong foot forward. Despite being a skilled skier, I was determined to conquer snowboarding. I gave it another go, this time with the right equipment and mindset, and I finally learned how to ride. Even though I still prefer skiing, I’m proud that I didn’t give up. Our careers often present us with challenges that seem insurmountable, but every setback is an opportunity to learn, adjust, and come back stronger. We belong in every room, at every table, and on every stage. Like Olympic champions, we have the power to rewrite the rules, redefine success, and inspire the next generation to dream even bigger. As we start this Monday, let’s carry that spirit with us. Be bold in your ambitions, relentless in your pursuits, and unafraid to take up space. The glass ceiling is there to be shattered—not just for ourselves, but for every woman who will follow in our footsteps. Now it’s your turn: Think about a time when you faced a challenge or setback and transformed it into a success. As I watch a few games from the Paralympics 2024. There was a deep emotional connection, which amazed me and was shaking my thoughts. When I look into it and ask the question, "What makes the difference?" What is it? Why people do it despite the struggle and pain? What for? What I discovered was that they are not yet ready to give up - with the challenges life has thrown at them, they are warriors who want to leave a mark of their will power, a signature, on important acts to prove that this is not the voice of ego, but of the human spirit at its highest expression, rising up and declaring to the world around them that it has something to do with every human and their struggles. It is a statement to individuals who have had everything threw at them - to discourage, crush their goals, and break their spirits. Yet something about them remains as pure as light, shining beyond any known limitations - an exhibition of life in its highest dimension -in its full colors - if you could see it. A wonderful display of human spirit and resilience - just WOW! “I am not this Hair, I am not this skin, I am the soul that lives within.” -Rumi I have a feeling that the mass media celebrates sports stars, giving them superhero status and branding them as icons. They are undoubtedly amazing, but why not treat these players the same way? In fact, they deserve more, if not just equality. Maybe it's time to start thinking about it and act on. Here is another sports analogy for you.... Imagine a workplace that feels like the Olympic Village —full of mutual respect, support, and celebration. The 2024 Paris Olympics isn’t just a sporting event; it’s a catalyst for women’s empowerment (or a ‘femininomenon’ if you will). From Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles bowing to Rebeca Andrade to Lindsey Horan embracing Saki Kumagai, women athletes are winning hearts by supporting each other. This reminds us of the power of lifting each other up—a lesson for any workplace. During my career intermission between adidas and Nike, I joined a women’s networking group in Portland. It felt like my own "Career Olympics"—brilliant women connecting, sharing knowledge, and cheering each other on. We didn’t fight for a seat at the table; we built a bigger, better table together. Reading this ELLE Magazine article about the Olympics brought me back to those days. It’s about women showing up, speaking out, and lifting each other. In a divided world, seeing rivals become friends is the wholesome content we need. "Female athletes are winning off the podium too—by showing up for, speaking out in support of, and fangirling over each other—no matter the country, game, or score. At a time when the whole world feels divided on almost everything, watching rivals become BFFs reminds us of the healing power of good sportsmanship—and what women are capable of achieving when they are not being pitted against each other." In the career race, we’re not competing against each other; we’re competing against the obstacles. This past weekend, while enjoying the Hungarian Grand Prix with my husband, I found myself pondering a question that may seem straightforward but is quite profound. I asked him, "Why don't we see women racing alongside men in Formula 1?" Despite talented female drivers like Bianca Bustamante making significant strides in motorsport, there are still several barriers preventing women from competing in F1. Historically, motorsport has been male-dominated, with fewer opportunities for women to progress through the ranks. Additionally, securing sponsorship and support can be more challenging for female drivers, which is crucial for advancing to higher levels of racing. Moreover, the physical demands of F1 are often cited, although many believe that with the right training and support, women can meet these demands just as well as men. There's also a lingering stereotype that racing is a "man's sport," which further hinders the inclusion of women. There have been a handful of women who in the past have successfully made their mark on F1. 🏁Maria Teresa de Filippis - The first woman to race in F1, she competed in the late 1950s and participated in three World Championship Grands Prix. 🏁Lella Lombardi - The most successful female driver in F1 history, she competed in the mid-1970s and is the only woman to have scored points in a World Championship race, with a sixth-place finish at the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix. 🏁Divina Galica - A British driver who attempted to qualify for three F1 races in the late 1970s but did not make it to the starting grid. 🏁Giovanna Amati - The last woman to have entered the Formula 1 World Championship, she attempted to qualify for three races with Brabham in 1992 but did not make it to the starting grid. If there are available seats, why aren't women being given the chance to race at this level? It’s clear we need to challenge these stereotypes, provide equal opportunities, and support female drivers more robustly. While these drivers have paved the way, there is a growing movement to encourage and support more women in motorsport. Initiatives like the F1 Academy and increased support from teams and sponsors are steps toward a more inclusive future in racing. I'd love to hear your thoughts and insights on this topic. Motorsports is NOT a fair sport. Especially if you're a woman. There's a concept in business that my ex-boss used to always quote: Unfair Advantage. Even though I wanted no part of what he was doing, or his work culture by the time I left - this concept stuck with me. It got me thinking about why successful people reached where they are now. Talent? yes. Luck? yes. Hard work? yes. But more often than not, they could open doors a bit quicker than others, get into a room with someone a bit faster, and close deals a bit better. That extra bit? That's the unfair advantage. But with Women in Motorsports, it's different. They have an unfair disadvantage. From people underestimating their skill to the way they look, their perceived lack of "strength" to anything that can pull them down. It's skewed against them. But I assure you, having seen some incredible women work in the F4 Pits last year - including our students - that is NOT the case. They are as hard-working, talented, motivated, smart and agile as anyone on the grid - and it shouldn't be even a question of how. So like last time, we want to do our part in cancelling out the unfair disadvantage. The United Motorsports Academy Women in Motorsports Scholarship for this year's L.I.M.E is now live.
