Australian Law Reform Commission’s Post

Law reform is at its best when it's widely understood. Here's the ALRC and Victorian Law Reform Commission staff after an excellent masterclass on the power of plain English writing. Thanks to Nick Gadd for his expert instruction and reminder to always keep the reader front of mind. #lawreform

Great work. When you have mastered the art of writing plain English, perhaps you could have a masterclass on how to count in simple ways that can be understood. In legislation, the numbering of sections should be numerical and sequential, with the intervention of the Alphabet to be banned! Currently, (as an example) the Family Law Act includes section numbers like 67ZBA to 67ZBL and there is a Part XIIIA and a Division 13A. That is all straightforward, isn't it? Reforming the intersection of letters and numbers in the Law. The last great frontier of Law Reform..........

I will believe it when I read it. Almost always legislation is hard to read.
