Calling native title and land rights lawyers! The ALRC has published the terms of reference for its examination of the native title future acts regime. The scope is broad and presents exciting opportunities for reforms that can modernise the regime to bring about greater justice and rights for traditional owners. Watch this space!

While sometimes issues can only be settled by legal action, here is a current example where litigation is not being used as the primary tool. Provinces should take notice.

I look forward to speaking at the Bologna Peacebuilding Forum organized by the Agency for Peacebuilding. Speaking on the future of (contested) peace mediation, I will be sharing lessons on mediation in communal violent conflicts based on Conflict Research Network West Africa work on Sub-National and Local Peacebuilding institutions in Nigeria. Why are communal conflicts important for mediation? because most of such conflicts occur in context of civil wars and continue even when civil wars "end".

Update in our 3 group lawsuits before EDNY challenging the Biden administration’s deprioritization of family preference category IV applicants (#SunnyvBiden #SantosvBiden #WilsonvBiden): Judge Cogan has denied our motion to amend complaints and dismissed the lawsuits. Judge Cogan did acknowledge that "Plaintiffs have the better textual argument," when it comes to State Department's duty to issue 226,000 family preference visas annually. However, he cited 3 reasons why he declined to go down that path for these lawsuits: (1) State Department's increased IV issuance volume, (2) most plaintiffs have been issued visas, and (3) relief sought would displace other applicants who are also DQ and waiting for interviews. If you were a plaintiff in Sunny, Santos, or Wilson who still has not been interviewed or issued a visa, know that Morrison Urena will continue to provide consular processing support and guidance to you. NORTH MACEDONIA AND EU #ACCESSION #NEGOTIATIONS. In December 2005, the #EU #Council decided to grant NORTH MACEDONIA candidate status. Since October 2009, the #EU #Commission has continuously #recommended to open #accession #negotiations with North Macedonia. In light of the progress achieved, the Commission repeated its #unconditional #recommendation to open #accession #negotiations in April 2018. In light of the significant progress achieved and the #conditions set unanimously by the #Council in June 2018 having been #met, in May 2019 the #Commission reiterated its #recommendation to open accession negotiations with North Macedonia. In March 2020, the #European #Council endorsed the General Affairs #Council’s #decision to #open #accession #negotiations with North Macedonia. In July 2020 the #draft #negotiating #framework was presented to the Member States. In July 2022, the #Intergovernmental #Conference on #accession #negotiations was held with North Macedonia. The Commission started the #screening #process, which is progressing smoothly. In July 2023, the #European #Commission submitted to the #Council the #screening #report on #Cluster 1 – Fundamentals, including benchmarks for opening #accession #negotiations on this #cluster.
