common stock vs. preferred stock ➡ A stock is a form of security that indicates the holders have proportionate ownership in the issuing corporation and is sold predominantly on stock exchange. corporations issue stock to raise funds to operate their businesses. ➡ There are two main types of stock: common and preferred. common stock has greater risk but also has the possibility for capital growth and voting rights. Preferred stock has no voting rights and lacks the prospect of capital growth, but it does offer fixed-income payments and dividend distribution priority. ⬇ Differences between common vs. preferred stock is explained in presentation below. A stock (also known as equity) is a security that represents the ownership of a fraction of a corporation. This entitles the owner of the stock to a proportion of the corporation's assets and profits equal to how much stock they own. Units of stock are called "shares” and they are bought and sold on a stock exchange or over-the-counter. Some benefits of owning stocks include dividends and capital gains, claim on assets (if company faces liquidation), voting rights (on company operations/plans), and limited liability (should the company be bankrupt). Capital appreciation is a great way to grow wealth within your portfolio, especially if they are held within tax-sheltered accounts like a TFSA or RRSP.
