The contaminated blood was given to 30,000 people, both #children & #adults. #Thousands of adult recipients unknowingly #infected #spouses & #partners. Many #recipients #died. Many #spouses & #partners #died. Almost ALL of the 300+ #hemophiliac #children #died after receiving the infected blood products. ASSESSMENT: The UK public states: Many #questions are still #unanswered by the #NHS & #UK government officials. Many #essential #facts are still #covered #up by the #NHS & the #UK government about how infected blood products were allowed to come into the NHS from the #US & given to patients. #Compensation for #physical & #emotional #damages has not been provided. So called #CostSharing - increases in the cost of #preventive care such as #PrEP - reduces #PrEPRetention and may cost us in newly acquired #HIV infections. "Higher out-of-pocket costs for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) were projected to lead to more people discontinuing PrEP altogether in a new analysis, raising concerns about a possible rise in HIV infections. [....] Even a small increase in out-of-pocket cost -- from $0 to $10 per monthly PrEP prescription -- was projected to double the rate of PrEP abandonment from 5.6% to 11.1%, Lorraine Dean, ScD, from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, and colleagues reported in Health Affairs. [...] Her group also looked at actual rates of HIV diagnoses among people who did not fill their prescriptions. Across all out-of-pocket categories, ranging from $0 to over $500, HIV incidence was two- to threefold higher in the following year among patients who did not fill their prescription compared to those who did." In other words: (which should surprise no one) 1) PrEP works to prevent HIV. 2) Making PrEP costly - even just a little - or inconvenient - prevents it from working, and reduces access.

We conducted a rapid response qualitative study to better understand climate-related disruptions to HIV, STI, and harm reduction services, and provide recommendations for policy action (L Moran, K Koester, S Joshi, W Steward, E Arnold CAPS/PRC) Natural disasters related to climate change are on the rise in California, but the impacts of climate-related events on healthcare delivery and client engagement in care are not well understood. The critical care needs of those receiving HIV, STI, and harm reduction services are of particular importance; disruptions to services pose an immediate threat to the continuity of care and client health. We conducted a rapid response qualitative study to better understand climate-related disruptions to services, document adaptive strategies, and provide recommendations for policy action.

World AIDS day was recently celebrated and an article on Pharmacy Times caught my attention. The article was on a study published in #naturemedicine. The study was centered on individuals living with HIV who have non-suppressible viremia. The study discovered that in individuals with non-suppressible viremia, there are mediators propagating the viral non-suppression. #Jonathan Li, MD stated that an understanding of the mechanism of these mediators will help disrupt the viral persistence. #whatdoesthismean: now this means that when researchers successfully understand the critical changes of the viral and host immune factors, they will be better poised to make interventions. These interventions will then help individuals living with non-suppressive viremia to also have a fully suppressed viremia. This will then ensure better living conditions for individuals with NSV and an improved safety for all. #healthcare #pharmacy #pharmacyinnovation #pharmacypractice

At the end of June, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit upheld a lower court ruling that a portion of the ACA’s preventive care mandate is unconstitutional. However, the court said the ruling should apply only to the plaintiffs who brought the case. The plaintiffs objected on religious grounds to providing coverage of services such as pre-exposure prophylaxis medications for HIV.
