Reimagining how to leverage AI effectively and responsibly is at the forefront of a lot of leader’s minds right now, including Sal Khan, Founder of the Khan Academy. Sal returns to On Leadership to discuss how AI-powered tools can provide personalized tutoring to students, assist teachers with administrative tasks, and transform assessment and credentialing. He advocates for embracing AI’s potential and argues that while there are valid concerns about AI, the technology also presents immense opportunities to improve education and support learners if implemented thoughtfully and ethically. https://lnkd.in/djbj8Tgz

A few weeks back I was in a conversation at a manufacturer about how AI can be used to analyze process and machine data to assist in reporting and coming up with parameters to investigate. I found myself just a few weeks later going back to my old way of thinking with long DOE's and the length of time to analyze data ... daunting.... (luckily the drive home woke my brain back up!) Changing the way we think is no easy task. We are all in the business of time. How can you think about what you do differently and how you add value? How are you considering using AI? I'd recommend for manufacturers that are unsure of how to use AI, this introductory 3-hour workshop is a great starting point. Attendees will gain a foundational understanding of Generative AI, its applications in manufacturing, and practical examples of its impact. https://lnkd.in/egbaaACB

One of my recent walk and talks was with a brilliant #K12 district leader who had spent a good portion of the last year working with a task force to build generative AI #literacy and resources to support safe, ethical, and responsible use. She was proud of the foundation they had built. Then she said, “We started the year and it hit me. We have new ELA standards. Our math standards are only a year old. We are asking people to take on new school improvement protocols. How are we ever going to keep generative AI as an urgent priority?” For folks in this place where initial urgency to respond to #genAI has been met, and competing priorities abound, consider this: There was a reason you started to build AI literacy and help people use it safely, effectively, and ethically. 💫If you want to keep that work as a priority, remind stakeholders why you activated teammates around generative AI and why you are continuing to do so. 💫Invite others to share why they are invested in this work as well. Anyone working on the initial work your organization is doing around generative AI has ALL the context, ALL the information, ALL the learning. 💫If you want to create urgency, start by sharing that context and information in ripples. Identify 3-5 core messages and share them with stakeholders during every meeting and every touchpoint. 💫Use common language in your messaging so you are building capacity and awareness simultaneously. 💫Showcase examples (not exemplars) of how this work is being applied in everyday contexts. Nothing feels urgent if only a few people are talking about it, it receives only intermittent mentions, or it is not visibly sponsored by leadership. 💫Activate your leaders as models, as communicators, as activators who will bring the next layer of evangelists along and hand them the megaphone. 💫Invite leaders to share what they are learning in real time to feed a culture where learning and not answers are the norm. The integration of generative AI is as much about people change as it is about technology. Urgency to learn, practice, and integrate generative AI into our practice has not passed. You may just need to create that next layer of urgency. 👊🏽 How are you keeping urgency alive in your organization?

𝗜 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱’𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 Or: The art of asking the right questions Recent research (Zhao et al., 2024) highlights the important role of human judgment and knowledge in utilizing LLMs effectively. It is already well known that the usefulness of LLMs significantly depends on how questions or commands are phrased. However, what if a question is unanswerable? It must be reformulated, not just rephrased. This is a very challenging, creative, and demanding task which cannot be performed by LLMs as the newest research shows. Consequently, this also underscores the need for humans to shift their focus from merely providing answers to asking the right questions. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 1️⃣ Phrasing Matters: The effectiveness of LLMs hinges on the clarity and structure of the questions asked. 2️⃣ Need for Reformulation: Unanswerable questions require fundamental reformulation to be addressed correctly by LLMs. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼? 1️⃣ Training Programs: Develop training programs that emphasize the importance of question formulation and reformulation. 2️⃣ Encourage Critical Thinking: Foster a culture where employees are encouraged to critically assess and refine their queries (see also Strauss MindTech). 3️⃣ AI Collaboration Workshops: Conduct workshops to practice effective human-AI collaboration, focusing on how to ask the right questions. 4️⃣ Continuous Learning: Promote continuous learning and adaptation to improve employees' skills in interacting with AI systems (see also Christina Strauss). By implementing these strategies, managers can enhance the effectiveness of AI tools in their organizations, leading to better decision-making and innovation. #AI #Management #Collaboration #Innovation #Leadership #HumanAIInteraction Strauss MindTech Universität Witten/Herdecke
