Most people will tell you that you need to build a team to scale, a team that runs the business without you, and a team to step away from daily operations. And all of those things are correct. In fact, I often talk about building independent teams that are empowered to make decisions in your absence so you can step away from your business. But before you start building a team, you need to work on your emotional readiness. This way, when your first hire comes on board, you'll be emotionally equipped to lead them. The worst thing you can do as a leader and business owner is to hire a team but not give them the opportunity to show what they can do. I often see leaders who, due to emotional unpreparedness, fail to properly onboard new hires or give them the trust they deserve. This results in new hires leaving due to a lack of leadership and emotional readiness on your part. Remember, building a team isn't just about hiring—it's about being ready to lead and let go.

As leaders, the greatest gift we can give our teams is focus. Focus is hard, because strategy is more what you will NOT do, vs what you will do. Prioritize from first principles, outcomes. Transparently share those with your teammates, make them a part of the process, and help them succeed. Companies are simply collections of people with a shared goal. Provide clarity and focus around that goal, ask your teams how you can help and celebrate their success. PS. We just had our best quarter, ever, and are always hiring exceptional new team members.
