What’s the deal with work Christmas parties these days? 🎄🎄🎄 Do you offer a Christmas party? What’s it for? And do you hold it in work time? Is the Christmas party a chance to celebrate achievements during the year? Or is the party a gift to employees? Either way, does that mean it should be held in work time? If colleagues are celebrating work achievements, why should they do that on a Friday night? And even if it’s the gift of a party, surely that is also most of a gift if it’s during the working day? And how inclusive is it? If it’s held on a Friday night, how many people are excluded through caring responsibilities, not liking traditional parties or any other reason? Those people wouldn’t get any of the intended benefit. One year I tried to solve these questions by giving my team a gift and allowing them to choose it themselves. That seemed like the best actual gift, particularly when they were globally spread out and having a celebration during work time wasn’t possible. I think a real gift is something you chose yourself? Not the offer of a party you don’t want to go to. Am I just a miserable Scrooge? I guess if people feel valued year round Christmas party is neither here nor there. What do you think?
