Had a contentious email chain with a conference organizer who didn't recognize any issue with their speakers being >80% white men. 😬 What are folks' favorite resources for explaining why this is a problem? Especially in support of diverse/representative tech speaker lineups? Personally, my go-tos are: * Brotopia (book, Emily Chang): explains how toxic cultures and unrepresentative groups in Silicon Valley perpetuate harmful spaces. * https://lnkd.in/g5aCWTvh (talk, Fatima Sarah Khalid): discussing the experience of being a minority and why allyship is important. I posted on other social media networks and the answers were mixed. Some folks recognized the harm that homogenous speaker lineups do to the conference and surrounding tech cultures. Others either mistook this to be watering down the conferences for the sake of DEI or didn't seem to believe the anecdotes or studies showing how harmful poor representation is. I'd like to be more effective in explaining these points and why I turn down conferences that don't do them well. An explainer blog post would be ideal, but any resource would be wonderful.
