A nurse came to inpatient pharmacy today to get vitamin K and I gave her Phytomenadione. Her: Madam this is not Vitamin K and rolls her eyes🙄. Me: Phytomenadione is the scientific term for Vitamin K. Her: You don’t have the one that says vitamin K on the package ? Me: Smiles and hands over the package, no we don’t . This was my prime right here 😂💊💊 But anyway, vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin. Your body stores vitamin K in the liver and other body tissues, including the brain, heart, pancreas, and bone. It is also known as the clotting vitamin. The body needs vitamin K to make certain proteins in the liver that cause blood to clot. These proteins are called clotting factors. Without vitamin K, the liver could not produce clotting factors II, VII, IX, and X, and blood would not clot. Some studies suggest that vitamin K helps maintain strong bones in older adults. Side effects are rare but with long term use of antibiotics such as Cephalosporins you can experience some of the side effects. Deficiency can result in bruising and bleeding that’s why it is imperative to have this vitamin in our diet . It’s also the antidote for warfarin toxicity but foods containing vitamin K can affect how warfarin works.
