"When we focuses on luxury high-rise construction, ARTEKS got in line with the contemporary global trends in construction and urban planning. ARTEKS has proven that we can build high and on a world level. Climate change, sustainable development, healthy lifestyle while preserving natural resources - we cannot pretend that these words are fashionable clichés, some temporary media hype. There are global problems that cannot be solved without the means of architecture and construction. The urban population, for example, is increasing exponentially worldwide. The city needs to tighten its fabric to accommodate all these people, while offering them an attractive place to live at a reasonable price. The natural, sensible, eco-friendly answer is high-rise construction. Much less resources will be consumed by many more people (happy to live in the heart of the big city) than if the city expands and expands with supposedly innocuous five-six-story buildings, which, however, require colossal funds for the corresponding expansion of infrastructure.” Read the whole interview of architect Plamen P. More on gentrification In the realm of architecture, there have been successful gentrification projects that managed to balance revitalization with community preservation. One notable example is the High Line in New York City. The High Line is an elevated linear park built on a historic freight rail line on Manhattan's West Side. The project transformed a disused railway into a vibrant public space that incorporates greenery, art installations, and gathering areas, revitalizing the surrounding neighborhood while preserving its industrial heritage. Another example is the Tate Modern in London. The Tate Modern is a contemporary art museum housed in a former power station on the banks of the River Thames. The adaptive reuse of the industrial building into a cultural hub has not only revitalized the area but also integrated the local community through art and exhibitions, creating a space that is accessible to a diverse audience. RIBApix presents a series of features exploring the Architectural Review's radical assessment of the built environment at the end of the 1960s, MANPLAN. Looking forward to the new decade ahead in the autumn of 1969 The Architectural Review (AR) paused to examine and evaluate state of the nation through its architecture and planning. This was by way of the publication of ‘Manplan’, a number of special editions of the AR focusing on topics ranging from housing to religion and how well these functioned within society. Manplan was not only a radical, sometimes brutal assessment of the built environment of the day, but today forms a poignant reminder of British life at the end of the sixties. Its stated intention was to take “as its yardstick real needs rather than minimum standards. Hence the title MANPLAN. A plan for human beings with a destiny rather than figures in a table of statistics.” (The Architectural Review, September 1969) The first edition, Manplan 1, was published in September 1969 with the series ending a year later with Manplan 8. The intended Manplan 9 focusing on Leisure was never published, however the RIBA holds some of the photographer Patrick Ward’s contact sheets

How did the built environment come into being? Along with the emergence of civilisation, I realised that architecture has always been a part of our history; not plain shelter, not protection against the natural forces but the art of architecture. Our nomadic lifestyle was replicated in the Inuit's makeshift dwellings, crafted from natural elements, and the Mongolian yurts' tent-like structures. Architecture encouraged permanent settlements in Çatalhöyük, Turkey where interconnected mud brick housing promoted community living. With religion, architecture was indelibly shaped to accommodate spiritual evolution and the Hagia Sophia, initially built as a cathedral transformed into a mosque and later converted to a museum symbolises the religious influence on architecture. The Industrial Revolution reshaped rapid construction techniques for mass production. The Crystal Palace in London featured a cast iron and plate glass structure utilising modular design. The invention of the elevator made way for vertical expansion with The Equitable Life Building in New York City being the spatial experiment.
