Today, Alex Sarian, CEO of Calgary’s Arts Commons, announced a historic $75-million-dollar donation from David Werklund, marking the largest philanthropic gift to the performing arts in Canadian history. At the heart of the Arts Commons Transformation (ACT), Canada’s largest arts-focused infrastructure project, is a commitment to creating a performing arts space that is of and for Calgary – a place where everyone feels welcomed and comfortable. Working alongside Calgary’s Hindle Architects and the Arizona- and Calgary-based Tawaw Architecture Collective Inc., this concept guided the entire design process and laid the groundwork for a design philosophy centered around community, arts, and culture. Inspired by Alberta’s natural landscape and regional lodge typologies — as spaces for gathering — the ACT expansion adds a gently curved building to the existing ecosystem, uses natural materials, and embodies a design spirit that welcomes you in to share and hear stories.
