On a recent Delta Air Lines flight I was able to see CEO, Ed Bastian, interact with flight staff, and I was impressed with his easy rapport and obvious EQ. Then I came across this Inc. Magazine article, and found it to be a great testament to Bastian's leadership style. When he started his CEO position at Delta Air Lines he was told he was too “public” and should instead have a private email address and phone number so he couldn’t easily be reached. He declined - a perfect example of how he emphasizes the importance of listening to his customers and employees. And when asked in a radio interview to describe his job in 5 words, Bastian’s answer was simple and brilliant...”Take care of our people.” For Bastian, leadership isn't solely about decision-making but also about understanding how those decisions impact people. If you want a strong culture, you need strong rituals. Pilot training has a great ritual. The first major milestone in any pilot’s career is their solo flight. This is the first time you leave your instructor back on the ground and take to the air all on your own. Your life is literally in your hands. During Air Force pilot training, in preparation for the solo, each member of the class will put their names on the side of a large dunk tank. After your solo, your class's goal is to grab you, pick you up, and drop you in the dunk tank. Your goal is to get from your plane to the flight room without anyone catching you. Of course no one does. Everyone gets caught. Everyone gets wet. Then you cross your name off the side of the tank. It is a really fun bonding moment for the class and celebrates a major milestone in your flying career. Team’s can have all kinds of positive rituals. - How do you celebrate a sale? - What happens when you finish a project? - Do you stop to acknowledge birthdays on your team? Teams can also have negative rituals. - How do people respond when someone makes a mistake? - Is there celebration when someone gets promoted? - Do people run for the doors at the end of the day? The rituals you choose to promote on your team will have a big say in the kind of culture your team has. They can seem silly at first but make a big difference over time. Here’s a story that’s not just about overcoming obstacles but about extraordinary leadership and kindness. Imagine this: My mother (who prefers to say she’s in her 60s, though she’s actually in her 70s) is on a mission. She’s flying from Steamboat Springs, Colorado to Miami to pick up my 7-year-old nephew and then fly him back to Colorado for Grammy Camp while mom and dad take a break. 🚀 She gets to the airport, all set for her adventure, begins to check in… but WAIT - her wallet??? 😱 She left it at the bank! (Cue dramatic music) Enter our hero, United Airlines manager Rochell Clark. With quick thinking and a bit of magic, she used alternative IDs like prescriptions to get Grammy on her flight. But she didn’t stop there. She went above and beyond, offering to have either herself or her husband pick up the wallet and overnight it to Miami so it would be there by 8 AM the next morning before their return flight. 🦸♀ What’s truly impressive isn’t just that she made it happen, but how she did it: with grace, warmth, and innovative solutions. For me, this is what’s it all about and why I’ve stuck around for over 30 years in the Casino-Resort industry. Pictures here are some of the best operators and creative marketers in the industry today. Like seriously. We have done more innovative, creative, profitable and duplicated casino marketing efforts with more success that anyone in the industry today. All we are missing is Steve Neely. Michael Michaud , Peter Arceo, MBA, Steve and I all started in the business at the same time, (mid to late 90’s) and at the bottom of the food chain. (Not Martin (Marty) Moore , he’s been a boss since “Bugsy” Segal ran the Flamingo but he is a good egg too🤣). Over 30 years ago I was a marketing coordinator in South America and Palm Springs, CA, Michael too, and Peter was a marketing database coordinator/analyst at the LV Hilton! But after decades of work, toil, moves, disappointments, and victories, we are still standing. We are still here. And it pleases me to no end that they have been so successful in their respective careers. I’m proud of them and honored they are my friends. Wrapping up an amazing week on the road by busting out of the hotel gym into the great outdoors for my morning routine. My heart is filled with gratitude for our team, clients, and fellow professionals in transportation.
