The Benefits of Appointing an EA from Outside Your Industry ✔️ Highly Motivated Applicants Candidates from outside your industry are often highly motivated to prove themselves. Many have invested in professional development, built networks, and actively seek opportunities in your field. As a recruiter, I value eagerness to learn and outperform over industry experience. Offering a chance to a motivated candidate often results in top performance and strong loyalty. ✔️ Fresh Perspectives Sticking to the same methods can limit growth. Introducing someone with a different background can bring fresh ideas and approaches. A new EA from outside your industry will challenge old processes, drive change, and introduce valuable knowledge to your organization. ✔️ New Expertise An executive assistant with a different industry background can bring unique expertise. For example, an EA from a regulated industry can be invaluable for teams handling legal documentation. Or, an EA with financial market experience can assist businesses that have recently listed, offering fresh insights and support. ✔️ Breaking Into New Markets If your company is looking to expand into new markets, hiring an EA with experience in those sectors can give you a competitive edge. Their industry contacts, knowledge of customers, and understanding of key stakeholders will save time, money, and effort in securing business. #freshview #outsideyourindustry #newindustry #changeisgood #topcandidates #EA #executiveassistants #highperforming #eajobs #melbourne #brisbane #altitudeea

It’s crucial to know what type of EA you are looking for and for the EA to understand the scope of the role. Otherwise both sides will be frustrated and left unfulfilled.
Not all Executive Assistant roles are created equal. The title Executive Assistant is broad—and often vague. This can make it hard to assess the level of contribution or quantify previous experience. We think of it as a spectrum of capabilities, as shown in our below guide, and encourage our clients and candidates to do the same. On the left: transactional tasks like calendar management, travel coordination, and expenses. On the right: strategic duties—connecting the dots, creating efficiencies, anticipating needs, prepping for meetings, taking action without prompt, handling external comms, and managing client relationships. This spectrum also tends to reflect the budget required to hire at each level. When we ask companies to place their desired EA on this spectrum, the gap between expectations and budget often becomes clear. Many expect 'white glove' service and strategic value from their EAs—but they underestimate the investment needed for this level of support. There’s also nuance in what 'white glove' or 'strategic' means and can vary from one industry to another. For example, an EA supporting a billionaire experiences it differently than someone supporting a high-profile lawyer. The dynamics are different, as a lawyer is still serving clients despite their level of seniority, whereas a billionaire is often being served by others. Hopefully, this mini hiring guide is useful for those in London and New York - whether positioning/benchmarking your own role, through to those looking to hire an EA. Executive Assistants: It’s okay not to be okay! The role of an EA is no walk in the park. You’re juggling priorities, handling last-minute changes, anticipating needs, and ensuring everyone else stays on track, all while rarely getting a moment to pause yourself. Some days, it’s overwhelming. And you know what? That’s perfectly okay. It’s okay not to be okay. Being an EA demands patience, resilience, and adaptability, often at levels few others understand. Feeling stretched or needing a break doesn’t mean you’re failing, it means you’re human. Your worth isn’t measured by perfection or an unbreakable work ethic! It’s okay to admit when things are too much. Remember, even on tough days, you’re still doing an exceptional job. Give yourself the same compassion you’d offer others. Take that break, ask for help, and remind yourself: it’s okay not to be okay. Because when you care for yourself, you’re not just surviving, you’re building the resilience to thrive tomorrow. #ExecutiveAssistant #EA #EASearch ➔ EA Search - A specialist staffing agency dedicated to placing Executive Assistants, Personal Assistants, Chiefs of Staff, and business support staff across the UK and US. 📣 Join our talent pool via the link in the comments 📣

I’m often contacted by hiring managers, in need of an executive assistant for a defined length of time. This may be to support a particular project, introduce a specialist skill set or a variety of other reasons. The request is usually to source and appoint an executive assistant on a temporary basis. I’d like to share the advice I give in these scenarios, which is of particular relevance at the moment as we find ourselves in a job market favouring candidates. ❌ Is this all you want to do? ❌ Don’t you want to do more? ❌ Don't you want a proper job? There’s a bit of a misconception out there, a belief that being an Executive Assistant is a 'stepping stone', something temporary on the way to a bigger role. I've heard it many times during my career journey and it used to really get to me. Does anyone else relate? I just want to share my truth: being a high performing EA at the highest level isn’t 'just a job'; it’s a career, a profession. And a powerful one at that. #BusinessSupportProfession For those who’ve chosen this path, it’s not about wanting more; it’s about recognising the value of a role that’s essential to an organisation’s success. High-level EAs bring expertise and strategy, things that make a world of difference in the lives of their Execs. #LoveWhatYouDo To all the Career EAs out there who’ve heard this question before... know your worth. You’re not 'just' support; you’re the backbone, the stability, the leader, the advantage, part of a partnership, a member of the SLT... the list goes on! And there’s no role “more” than that. FACT. #ExecutiveAssistant #PersonalAssistant #StrategicPA #BusinessPartner #StrategicBusinessPartner #CareerEA #BestRoleOnTheOrgChart Through Strategic PA Network, Marianne Whitlock and I are deeply connected to the #BusinessSupport community, giving us access to a unique network of highly skilled, strategic EAs. We are passionate about the profession and connecting CEOs with the right talent to elevate their leadership teams and drive real impact. #ExecutiveSearch When you’re ready to make that next strategic hire, Marianne Whitlock and I would be delighted to discuss how we can help support you, working as an extension of your organisation. ✔️ Do follow our boutique search firm, Strategic PA Recruitment - SPECIALIST EA/PA AGENCY

Can experience outweigh a degree in the world of Executive Assistants? 🤔📚 Lately, there has been a trend where seasoned EAs face rejection due to the lack of a degree, despite being fully capable of handling the job requirements. It's puzzling how candidates with10-20 years of experience are required to hold a degree or an MBA to interview for roles like EA/PA, CoS, and Office Manager. Having extensive experience shouldn't be overshadowed by academic qualifications when it comes to being an Executive Assistant. It's intriguing to see professionals with over a decade in the field being asked to provide a degree for EA positions. These dedicated administrators have climbed the ladder from lower administration roles, putting in years of hard work to reach their current positions. Recruiters should consider hiring self-driven, accomplished, collaborative, and influential EAs/PA/Office Managers/CoS based on their problem-solving skills, execution abilities, and years of hands-on experience. Let's recognize and value the expertise and skills gained through practical work experience. #ExecutiveAssistants #Administrators #WorkExperience #RecruitmentInsights
