I am taking this A Better Force course because: Recently, someone called me angry in front of 100 people. People still touch my hair without my permission. People still tell me they don't see color. I am triggered when someone talks about someone "being suspicious" and "following their gut" to take action. I am taking this course because I am tired and ill equipped. Joining science can be driven by various reasons, and for me, it's all about helping people. Whether it's those who struggle with diseases, those who have lost hope, or those who feel like they have no choice but to suffer, I want to be part of the solution. Science gives me the chance to make a difference in their lives, no matter how complicated their situation may be. We all have our passions and motivations, and for me, it's about being that light that people need. Let's work together to make a positive impact on the world. "Safety isn't the absence of threat but rather the presence of connection." A thought-provoking talk by Dr. Gabor Mate on why and how stress, psychological trauma, and lack of connection caused by political, social, cultural, economic, racial, and familial conditions influence our mental and physical health, including autoimmune diseases, cancer, ADHD, addictions, behavioral problems, and a wide range of other conditions. However, he has devoted less attention to individual differences and the fact that many people (manage to) remain relatively healthy despite experiencing similar conditions. "If the science is as straightforward as I believe it to be, and the conclusions are as clear as I believe them to be, why don't we just embrace it, follow it, and do something about it? "Well, because everything would have to change; parents would have to change, how we treat young families would have to change, laws would have to change, education would have to change, and how we run the economy would have to change. We'd need something different. Well, getting to that something different has to begin with an inquiry." I think an inquiry to consider would be: How can insights and findings from stress- and trauma-informed pathology contribute to the development of trauma-informed job designs and organizational interventions aimed at reducing unemployment rates, sick leave, and job turnover?
