Responsible opioid prescribing in chronic pain can go a long way in averting a public health disaster. Worldwide, about 600 000 deaths were attributable to drug use in 2019. Close to 80% of these deaths are related to opioids, with about 25% of those deaths caused by opioid overdose. According to WHO estimates, approximately 125 000 people died of opioid overdose in 2019.

Did you know that alcohol-related deaths have significantly outpaced opioid-related deaths, with a staggering 178,000 compared to 80,000 in 2021 alone? Yet, the spotlight of our national health conversation and resources has focused on opioids. NorthStar is calling for a change! It's time for a pivotal shift in how we view and treat Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). Just like opioids, AUD requires comprehensive, medically-driven treatment approaches. Despite clinical success rates mirroring those for opioid treatments, medication utilization for AUD remains staggeringly low - just 0.4%. We must break down the barriers and stigma surrounding alcohol treatment and advocate for more accessible, effective care. #NorthStar #AlcoholAwarenessMonth #AllScienceNoStigma #AUD

Lack of awareness, lack of knowledge and misinformation are common reasons why many people do not ask their healthcare providers for naloxone. Yet those who are aware that naloxone is available may still be reluctant to inquire about it. Naloxone stigma is a public health hazard To overcome the stigma associated with naloxone, we must reframe what naloxone symbolizes.10 Carrying a naloxone product such as Kloxxado®(naloxone HCl) nasal spray 8 mg shows that we care about the safety of others.10-12 It also represents a way to support and protect the well-being of people who continue to suffer with substance use disorder (SUD).10 Use of Naloxone for the Prevention of Opioid Overdose Deaths https://lnkd.in/eAe5Jm_s #NARCANSAVESLIVES

Insightful piece that discusses opportunities for freeing #methadone from outdated regulations to empower patients to access treatment and advocate for its expansion. The authors stress that partnering with community #pharmacies and local health systems is key. This approach may be especially relevant to #rural communities where OTPs are largely non-existent. https://lnkd.in/eEpQWcsy
