I asked myself why 🤔 Eventually, I think that this is because it conveys such an extraordinary message of - generosity - social inclusion - intergenerational solidarity - the power of education in creating self-empowerment and dignity - the multiplier effect of health-care workers on human health as a pre-requisite for well-being. We must strive to make these cases ordinary. Let's give our best to find the right recipe in every action for sustainable development! Washington DC's Mayor Bowser recently announced that Bloomberg Philanthropies is injecting $9.5M to expand DC's Advanced Technical Center (ATC). Why does this matter? → ATC equips high schoolers with professional skills for high-demand, high-wage careers → Funding builds pathways for students pursuing healthcare professions → Addresses projected DC healthcare professional shortages by 2030 American Federation of Teachers (AFT) President Randi Weingarten notes: "This grant comes at the right time for the right opportunity. We need to create the next generation of nurses, surgical techs, radiology techs, respiratory techs, and more as we work to fill 4 million open national healthcare positions by 2031." The pilot program's growth is impressive: → Student enrollment doubled in one year → The first cohort earned over $882K worth of college credits These results show what happens when local government, educational institutions, and industry leaders collaborate. They've identified education and career trajectory issues and are tackling them head-on. Long-term public-private collaborations like this pave the way for smoother school-to-career transitions. The incredible news from Einstein Medical School in the Bronx from Dr. Ruth Gottesman's historic $1 billion gift marks a monumental moment in medical education and research. https://lnkd.in/eqHFufZs Reflecting on the journey, it's awe-inspiring to think that nearly 75 years ago, there was only 1 doctor in New York dedicated to studying muscle disease. Today, thanks to organizations like the Muscular Dystrophy Association building the field of neuromuscular medicine with our partners and community, and visionary philanthropists like Dr. Gottesman, we're witnessing a transformative shift.   This significant contribution not only fuels groundbreaking research but also opens doors for aspiring medical minds, breaking down barriers to education and opportunity. With access to resources like MDA Care Centers, over 150 strong in our network, we're empowering individuals and families living with muscular dystrophy, ALS, and related neuromuscular diseases to lead longer, more independent lives.   Together, we're rewriting the narrative of possibility and progress in healthcare. This morning, I represented University of Delaware at a fall-risk screening and education event at Mid-County Senior Center in Wilmington, DE. Nancy Nguyen and I shared information about our lab's ongoing studies and UD Chrc resources for getting involved with research in our college. Fall-risk screening was conducted by University of Delaware Physical Therapy Clinic students. Colleagues from ChristianaCare and Beebe Healthcare, who are also fellow members of the Delaware Coalition for Injury Prevention, provided fall-prevention education. UD Partnership for Healthy Communities provided information and blood-pressure screenings. The Delaware Center for Cognitive Aging Research was also there sharing their resources. Some lessons learned from the experience: 1. The community appreciates these events. 2. Many people are not aware of opportunities to get involved with research, and they have misconceptions about what is involved with research participation. 3. We often have exclusion criteria (canes, walkers, past surgeries) in our studies to eliminate confounding variables and ensure protocol safety. Those criteria often exclude participants who are at a high fall risk and are eager to contribute to our work. This is a weakness that we will consider as we move forward with new questions and ideas.
