I’d put money on it you have at least one story about a bad leader you’ve either known or worked with. Mine was the manager who used to walk around the office waving a walking stick around like a baseball bat and shouting at people. He was quick to anger and was genuinely scary 😬 Unfortunately, there’s an epidemic of poor leadership in organizations, and it damages both the organization and the people in it. Bad leadership can take two forms – toxic leadership and ineffectual leadership. And both have the potential to be extremely damaging both for the individuals exposed to it and to the organization they're part of. It's been a minute, but wanted to recap a few key takeaways from my time at OWL: Advancing Diversity in Leadership Leadership Summit in Austin two weeks ago. A few things that stand out that are easily condensed for this format: - the answer is already in the room (Warren Foust). Advocating for giving your team room to use their diverse talents and skills to create the solutions to the problems. -If you are fishing in the same pond, you're likely to get the same fish- H. B. Pierre Simon Jr., MBA advocating for diversity in recruiting practices, so that you have a diverse slate of candidates. -Cynthia Matossian, MD sharing her story of the investments she has made in people and relationships throughout her career. Her openess to collaboration all in an effort to keep improving her patients' lives. I think the entire room probably has a heart warming story of the invesmtents she has made in our lives and careers. -Discussions about all the ways the ophthalmic industry is succeding, but our table really called out the road that has been layed before us. The pioneers that still walk among us, along side us, encouraging and inspiring us. My keyword takeaway: purposeful and intentional. We have some incredible humans in our industry, brilliant, kind, and funny. When you invest in people, in large and small ways, it makes a difference. Finally, lead with curiousity. (Yari Mitchell and Tiffany Montoya) We can learn so much about a problem, a person, a process just by asking the question. Thank you all for the laughs, hugs, motivation, and coaching.
