It's time to address the root causes of these conditions and promote long-term well-being through preventive strategies, lifestyle modifications, and early interventions. Moreover, musculoskeletal health exemplifies the dire consequences of neglecting prevention. Chronic overuse injuries, such as rotator cuff tears and degenerative disc disease, underscore the need for early intervention and preventive care to mitigate long-term damage. As a healthcare professional, I advocate for a shift in healthcare education and reimbursement structures to align with the goal of prevention. It's not just important; it's imperative to empower healthcare providers and patients to prioritize preventive measures, from lifestyle modifications to early interventions, and foster a culture of proactive healthcare. This, in turn, can lead to substantial cost savings by minimizing the need for expensive treatments and interventions. Moreover, preventive therapy can enhance labor productivity as healthier individuals are more likely to participate actively in the workforce and contribute to economic growth. The Northern Regional Health Directorate has recorded an increase in institutional mortality death rate from 69 in 2022 to 100 in 2023. This brought Institutional Maternal Mortality Ratio to 136.7 per 100,000 live births in 2023 compared to 94.5 per 100,000 live births for the year 2022 with the national target being 125 per 100,000 live births. The slight increase in mortality was largely due to service delivery challenges leading to the occasional absence of medical doctors in some of the major referral centres leading to the suboptimal functioning of these hospitals. The Regional Health Directorate has taken some serious measures towards addressing this worrisome trend of maternal deaths in the region even though without meeting the national target. The information was revealed by the Northern Regional Health Director, Dr. Abdulai Abukari at the 2023 annual performance review held in Tamale. The three-day conference brought together representatives from all the public health facilities and stakeholders in the region to review the performance of the region for 2023 successes, challenges and plans to improve healthcare services. It was on the theme; "Sustaining Essential Health Service Delivery Towards Achieving Universal Health Coverage: The Role of Stakeholders in Resources Mobilisation."

The stakes are too high to leave so many people with insufficient care The impact, especially on those most severely affected, can upend lives and finances. The impact of the condition ranges from mild to debilitating, leading to an inability to participate in routine activities, decreased workforce participation and reduced quality of life. And individuals with long Covid commonly face stigma. Prevalence reports in our study countries vary widely due to diverse methodologies, but experts estimate that between 2% and 7% of the population likely have long Covid in some form. Recent studies of long Covid report incredible variation in the prevalence of long Covid. What is clear is that millions of people around the world have been impacted by this condition. Good practices are emerging in long Covid care. Encouragingly, some countries have put policies in place to address long Covid. Best practice policies encourage multi-disciplinary, patient-centred care while supporting the social and economic needs of long Covid patients. Today is World Kidney Day. It’s a global event that aims to shine a light on activities, screenings and educational campaigns relating to kidney health. This year’s theme is ‘advancing equitable access to care and optimal medication practice’, focusing on the importance of maximising opportunities to diagnose and treat kidney disease earlier. Recent breakthroughs in CKD treatment have offered unprecedented opportunities to prevent or delay disease, ultimately prolonging quality and quantity of life. While these new therapies should aid the community, there are barriers getting in the way of optimal care, such as treatment costs, insufficient knowledge/confidence with new strategies and societal factors. The 2024 campaign looks to implement a strategy that will enact health policies, adopt successful healthcare delivery, educate healthcare professionals and empower patients and communities.
