Here are some key considerations for planning and executing a successful reservoir expansion project: 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗿 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝟭. 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁:   • Supply and Demand: Analyze current and future water needs to determine necessary capacity increases.   • Environmental Flows: Ensure expansion doesn’t harm downstream ecosystems by maintaining adequate environmental flows. 𝟮. In Port de Selva, Spain, a population surge from 1,000 to 10,000 over the summer holiday months pushed water demand sky-high. But with the help of digital technology to understand the underground, the seaside town now recycles wastewater using Soil Aquifer Treatment (SAT) to recharge aquifers and ensure a sustainable drinking water supply. “If we didn’t have the ease of integrating geophysical and lithological data from boreholes in Leapfrog Geo software, there’s no way we could have developed the aquifer and saltwater model that fast with a high degree of confidence,” - Alex Sendrós, a postdoctoral researcher at the Universitat de Barcelona. Source: (The Science of the total environment) Hydrogeochemical study of Cooloola Sand Mass, Australia, reveals groundwater sources, movement, and recharge in coastal GDEs threatened by over-abstraction, saltwater intrusion, and climate change. Analysis using major ions, stable isotopes, and tracers shows complex groundwater systems with mean residence times of 12-100 years, reliant on heavy rainfall. Findings inform conservation strategies for diverse GDEs in a 620 km² area.

The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), in collaboration with the United States Geological Survey’s (USGS) New York Water Science Center, announced the release of the Long Island Groundwater Sustainability Project (LIGWSP), the Island-wide groundwater model, and Phase 1 study and scenario results. Phase 1 focused on the aquifer system beneath Kings, Queens, and Nassau counties and provides valuable information about how the aquifer reacts under various scenarios, including sea level rise, drought, pumping, and more. DEC anticipates more detailed analysis of the phase 1 scenario results and future phase 2 and 3 results will lead to more understanding of areas and issues of concern. DEC will use this tool to predict the outcomes of various water withdrawal management strategies. Based on current and future model scenario outcomes, DEC will work with partners to develop policies and best management practices to protect Long Island’s groundwater resources.

This Earth Day, we have much to be thankful for. Clean water, clean air, a temperate climate, and flora and fauna provide us with the fundamental building blocks for life. Without this, family, the economy, music, the arts, and my favorite football team, the Sydney Swans, wouldn't be possible. Unfortunately, our economic system doesn't provide a cost for the building blocks or what it calls "externalities." This means that for too long, we've exploited and destroyed nature, with no meaningful financial incentive to change this behavior at the scale we need. Over past decades, we've made some progress in the right direction, including the creation of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) (side note: congratulations to Australia for the recent announcement of its own EPA), carbon pricing schemes, and nature-based infrastructure, to name but a few. Just last week, the U.S. Department of the Interior added its "Public Lands Rule" to this list. For the first time, the proposed rule puts conservation, recreation, and renewable energy development on equal footing with resource extraction. For the first time, the agency will auction off “restoration leases” and “mitigation leases” to entities with plans to restore or conserve public lands. That's a remarkable and much-needed shift for over 245 million acres of land (about 1/10th of US land). Our climate is on the precipice, and our natural environment is at a tipping point. If we are to move into a truly sustainable and equitable era, we require systems change. This new rule from the Department of the Interior offers a framework for achieving this.
