❗Remember: planning for after-care is just as important as planning for the intensive itself! 💥 Some questions to consider: 🔸 Is this a one-off intensive session/package or is this client doing routine 90-minute appointments? 🔸 If it’s a one-off, do they have a home-base therapist? 🔸 Do they have a support system? 🔸 Do they have a history of therapy? 🔸 Does this client have any current/past diagnoses? What about risk history? Asking these questions will help you determine what kind of wrap-up and after-care your client will need. In a one-off intensive/package, emotions often move quickly and the processing can be intense and unexpected. If your client isn’t doing this regularly, it may feel like a lot, and it’s important to ensure that they’ll be safe and supported in going back to their day-to-day life. If you decide that your client may need extra support, here are a few ideas: ☎️ Schedule a follow-up call after the session to check-in and see how things are settling. 📝 Craft a summary letter of the work that was done and future goals to keep in mind. 🧑⚕️ Schedule a follow-up session for integration and treatment planning. 🤔 Want to know more about how I treatment plan for 90-minute therapy intensives? Do you have traditional therapy clients who feel frustrated because they aren’t making progress? 😣 Maybe you’re even feeling frustrated, too? ⏰ The time constraints of traditional therapy can cause us, and our clients, to feel stuck in the healing process. When we’re starting over in the same place each week because there isn’t ever enough time to “dig in,” it’s really hard to make significant progress. This is a HUGE part of why I decided to offer intensives – I wanted to do better clinical work and help my clients heal more efficiently and effectively. 🌈 When adding intensives to your practice, I encourage you to start conversations with your current clients, especially the ones who’ve mentioned feeling stuck or frustrated. 💬 You can say something along the lines of, “I’m noticing that we get stuck in "X" way. Would you be interested in trying something different? It might be really helpful if we had a bit more time to expand on some things.” 💖 Not only does this help your client feel seen and supported in their struggles, they also trust you! And, if you’re recommending a new way to help them, they’ll probably be open to trying it. 🤩 Want to know more about how to pitch intensives to your current clients? When making a recommendation to a client about the best treatment plan, there’s really no exact science. ✨ Typically, 3-4 hours per day (with breaks) is a comfortable amount of time. But, even 90 or 120 minutes might be enough for someone! It’s up to you and what you think best fits the client’s needs and goals, combined with your expertise and what you believe you can offer them. For an individual, one day of 3-4 hours is a great starting point. However, if the initial consultation reveals more complex issues, you may decide to recommend 2 days of 3-4 hours each. When doing intensives, a thorough intake is crucial, for so many reasons! 📝 💑 For couples, I usually recommend no less than a 2-day package. Working with two people requires more time to develop a basic understanding of what’s going on and what the issues are before diving deeper. Your client(s) might go against your recommendation, and that’s ok. But, helping them understand why you believe your treatment plan would be effective is really important for building trust in the intensive process. Because it can be a lot, right? It’s a lot of hours together, a lot of processing, and a lot of money. So, people want to know that it’ll be worth it! 💖 Want to know more about how I treatment plan for multi-day therapy intensives? So many therapists never make the jump to add intensives to their practice because they assume extra training/education is needed. 🤷♀️ But, intensives are just compressed therapy… and you KNOW how to do therapy! Whatever you specialize at can be implemented in an intensive format. And, you get to decide how that looks – there aren’t any rules here. If you take the work you would do over the course of several weeks and compress it down to 2 days, what do you envision?! 🤩 Intensives have really renewed my passion for therapeutic work because I get to apply my knowledge in a new way AND see amazing results! (The increased income is pretty great, too. 🤯) Remember that therapy intensives aren’t a magic pill or a magic wand. 🔮🪄 You’re just using your expertise on a shorter timescale to foster a faster track towards healing! So, release the pressure and expectation that you have to “know” how to do this – you already do! 💜 Want to know more about how I treatment plan for multi-day therapy intensives? 👇 I hear this all the time. Therapist: "Would you be interested in trying a therapy intensive?" Client: “That’s a lot, isn’t it? Is that bad? Do you really think I need that much therapy?” *Insert elevator speech about intensives* 😅 🗣️ Your speech should cover why you're adding intensives to your practice and why it would help this particular client. Maybe it’s… 🔸 Because you want to try a more modern approach to therapy and healing 🔸 Because you want to offer a faster track towards healing for your clients 🔸 Because it’s more conducive to your modality Consider ALL of the questions that clients might have, too. 🧐 What are the objections, fears, and anxieties that might come up? In order to “sell” clients on this new service, it’s so important that you can field these (and other) questions gently, yet confidently. 💖 You can even say, “I'm newer to offering intensives myself, but I really believe in them because I've heard other therapists’ success stories.” 🎉 ✨ Ultimately, it all comes back to explaining that intensives are *just* extended therapy. I recently passed 2,500 clinical hours towards licensure, which means I have 500 more to go. I couldn’t stop and think about all the things I’ve learned these past couple of years. Here are the 3 most important lessons I’ve learned so far as an associate therapist: 1. Welcome the mistakes!! As an associate, this is the time to be making the mistakes. Push yourself to work with as many different populations and diagnoses as you can. Embrace the discomfort of not knowing what to do at times. With the help from individual and group supervision, the mistakes turn into teaching moments. 2. Be open-minded to different styles of therapy When I first started out, I was persistent with sticking to what I thought “good” therapy was. But after getting along well with some clients, and struggling with others, I quickly learned that therapy isn’t a one-size fits all. Engage in as much training as you can. Take what you want from different forms of therapy (CBT, DBT, ACT, etc.), and create your own style. After playing around with different interventions, I quickly became more confident in my ability to form strong relationships with my clients. 3. Self-Care is the MOST important part of this career I am a strong believer in the idea that you can’t fill someone else’s cup if your own cup is empty. It’s important to be real with yourself in what fills your cup - whether that be spending the weekend with loved ones, intentionally planning trips throughout the year, or going to the gym consistently. Despite the great things I learned in school, I think a good chunk of my growth as a therapist comes from the time spent with all of my clients. I know the road to licensure feels long, but it is worth every minute of it. #therapists #counselors #mentalhealth #therapistsintraining

🤩 It’s tempting to create an ambitious plan when prepping for an intensive session where there’s significantly more time than routine/weekly appointments. 📝 But, it’s important to set up realistic expectations for your clients. 🧠 No one can predict what might happen in a therapy session, especially an intensive one. We can’t control where the brain will go and what it will “allow” from a healing standpoint. 💝 So, in order to be gentle on both ourselves and our clients, we should never guarantee results. 🧑⚕️ Use your clinical knowledge/judgment to develop a plan that targets your client’s goals while also leaving room for anything else that may come up. ⏰ Maybe one portion of your session takes longer than expected, so you don’t get to everything in the plan, and that’s OK! While it’s important to maintain your time boundaries and help your clients manage their time, it’s equally important to be flexible (within reason). 🤝 Having an understanding of flexibility takes the pressure off of you AND your client. This is crucial for fostering a safe space for healing, especially when working with individuals who have experienced trauma. 🌈 Want to know more about how I treatment plan for 90-minute therapy intensives? Mental health counseling intern. Therapist, per my contract. Pursuing my Master's in mental health counseling. Person-centered, solution-focused, strength-based. Anthropology and philosophy in anamnesis.
This week, I used the de-catastrophizing sheets in my counseling session for the first time, which was a useful and interesting experience. Usually, when imagining a worst-case scenario(s) and everything that is related to worst cases (as they may come to our mind in packs, one scenario worse than another), we are not asking ourselves questions like, "What is the worst that could happen?" "What is the likelihood that the worst thing would happen?" "What is within my control about the situation (behaviors, responses)?", "What are the circumstances I cannot control about the situation?", "What is the likelihood that I will be okay in one week, one month, one year (percent)?" and so on. A widely spread belief is that you don't need to delve into bad thoughts, and so the worst-case scenarios are rarely considered rationally, in the light of the day. However, if you examine the worst-case scenarios in the concrete terms, maybe with your friend or even by yourself, you could begin looking at the prospect from a certain distance of rational estrangement. Cognitive behavior therapy's de-catastrophizing sheets (available at TherapistAid.com, for example, and in general, online, there seems to be an abundance of de-catastrophizing sheets) provide us with the opportunity to ask these questions and approach a more balanced prospect on the possible advancing catastrophic scenario. Have you tried de-catastrophizing sheets in your own practice of care or self-care? 😊 Share your experience! #mentalhealthcounseling #mentalhealthcare #decatastrophizing #worstcasescenario

🎉 This week starts a new series on “How to treatment plan for multi-day intensives”! Multi-day intensives are typically referred to as “intensive packages” - and this can look many different ways. You get to decide what works for you (and your client). A lot of clients like to do an intensive package over the weekend. But, keep in mind, I’m NOT telling you to schedule out all your weekends with intensives, ON TOP of your current weekly caseload. ❌ 🗓️ I would encourage you to decide ahead of time how many weekends you want to set aside each month for intensives and how you’ll balance that with your weekly clients (if you continue to do traditional therapy). Then, you can decide if you want your intensive packages to be multiple days, back-to-back, or if you want to spread the days out a bit. Maybe, you don’t want work weekends at all - and that’s cool, too! There are tons of clients who can (and WILL!) make those weekday packages work in their schedule because they understand the benefits of an intensive model. 🤩 There’s no right or wrong choice when deciding how to schedule packages. Again, it’s all about what works best for you! 💟 Want to know more about how I treatment plan for multi-day therapy intensives? We're excited to share with you the LAUNCH of our brand new website! Creating this website enhances our ability to share who we are as clinicians and how we view the therapeutic process. It will allow others to identify if telehealth is the right fit for them in therapy. Our website offers quick access to free consultations to help ensure a goodness of fit BEFORE beginning treatment. The process of finding a therapist right for YOU is hard enough in and of itself. We respect the therapeutic process so much that we feel consults are ESSENTIAL. They give individuals seeking care a chance to ask questions about our style and approaches, how we can address an issue they're battling, ask about our previous experiences with "x", or simply just to get a real-time feel for the telehealth format before getting started. As a result, our success rate following the free face-to-face consult is about 98% transition rate to an intake/services. Having an updated website with relevant information also allows us to respond to general questions about services without being inundated, guide or directly connect others to more appropriate forms of care and our collaborative partners, and be able to respond to requests from individuals in the community who are concerned for their loved ones. We patiently waited for this and we're thrilled to share this rollout. 👀 Do you have an FAQ page about intensives on your website? 🧑💻 I’ve found that an FAQ page is really useful for potential clients. If you clearly indicate the “ideal” client for each package, individuals can determine (based on their needs/trauma) which option would be the best fit for them. 🌟 Also, including some information about what a client can accomplish within each package helps set up those expectations early on. 👇 Here are some other topics I touch on in my FAQ section: ✅ Fees ✅ Insurance ✅ Online vs. in-person ✅ Potential clients who are out-of-state 🌈 Setting up expectations is crucial for fostering an efficient, effective, and safe space for healing, especially when working with individuals who have experienced trauma. ⏳ When both parties are aware of what’s achievable in the allotted time, it’s much easier to set goals and for you to treatment plan for maximum healing. ❤️🩹 Want to know more about how I treatment plan for 90-minute therapy intensives?
