As your organization recognizes #Juneteenth today, consider the history of the day and the importance of your impact on many today. Even if you’re still working, remember to be intentional about how you’re showing up for your people and communities you support not just today, but every day. Just like #MLK day, often people consider Juneteenth as a day of service. Some, a day of rest and reflection. Others, a call to action. The VP said of White House recognition: “Today as we celebrate Juneteenth, together we are reminded of the promise of America… A promise of freedom, liberty and opportunity, not for some but for all. In many ways the story of Juneteenth and of our nation is a story of our ongoing fight to realize that promise.” Key words to remember here: ongoing fight. For Black, Brown and Indigenous communities each and everyday of their lives. Today, we commemorate Juneteenth—a day of profound historical significance and enduring legacy. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with the news that the Civil War had ended and that enslaved people were now free. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, marks this monumental moment in American history. But Juneteenth is more than just a historical milestone. It’s a day to honor the resilient spirit of African Americans, reflect on our shared past, and commit to building a future rooted in equity and justice. It is a celebration of freedom, culture, and progress. How You Can Celebrate Juneteenth with Us: 🔹 Attend Local Events: Join community gatherings, parades, and cultural festivals that highlight African American art, music, and heritage. 🔹 Educate Yourself & Others: Learn more about the history of Juneteenth and share your knowledge with family, friends, and colleagues. 🔹 Support Black-Owned Businesses: Contribute to economic empowerment by shopping at Black-owned businesses and restaurants. 🔹 Become an Advocate: Advocate for policies and practices that promote social justice and equity in your community. Happy Juneteenth! Today we celebrate freedom while also reflecting on the ongoing injustices and struggles the Black community continues to face. The United States recognized Juneteenth as a federal holiday just THREE years ago. Although I am grateful to my company for recognizing the holiday and giving us the day off, I can’t help but feel uncomfortable knowing there are Black individuals working today who should be celebrating. Here are a few meaningful ways you can celebrate Juneteenth and support the Black community: 🤎Acknowledge Juneteenth and educate yourself on the holiday, why it’s celebrated, and the history behind it. 🤎Support a local Black-owned business. (Thank you Knuckle Sandwiches for lunch!) 🤎Follow a Black creator, artist, influencer, etc. 🤎Read a novel by a Black author. 🤎Stream music by a Black artist - (I can’t wait to see Megan Thee Stallion tonight!!) 🤎 Talk to a loved one about the importance of Juneteenth. Do they know the history? Do they know the importance of the holiday? 🤎Speak to a trusted leadership member at your company. Let them know you want your company to recognize Juneteenth and give everyone the day off. Starting this conversation can go a long way. #Juneteenth #HappyJuneteenth #Blackownedbusiness #Blackhistory #freedom #liberation

Juneteenth: Joy, remembrance, change 🎯 With #Juneteenth approaching, I am proud to be part of an organization that recognized Juneteenth as a paid holiday, even before it became a federal holiday, and even now, when many don't recognize it as an American holiday. I attended a webinar today that went over facts about Juneteenth. One of which was that you don't have to be black to celebrate Juneteenth.. because Juneteenth is American History. The panel dug into how, on July 4, 1776, black people were not free. So when we think about celebrating independence, we need to have both 4th of July and Juneteenth in tandem—and think about that pivotal moment when both the black community and those of European descent came together in this movement and fought against slavery. We still have a long way to go to continue making positive changes in marginalized communities, but it's a reminder of the positive impact of people coming together to make a change and be a part of the #change. ✊🏼 💡 Check out the following link for resources and guides on impactful ways to celebrate Juneteenth at work: https://lnkd.in/gkCUThBC

On or around June 19th, 1865, word of the Emancipation Proclamation finally got around to some of the last enslaved peoples in Galveston, TX, stating that slavery had indeed ended. And so Juneteenth was born – a holiday that has been celebrated in a multitude of ways by a variety of people for over 150 years. But in June 2021, it was officially celebrated as a National Federal Holiday. But with anything “new” comes questions. And as BarkleyOKRP’s ERG, The Hub and Putney would have it, we wanted to alleviate some of the pressure from Black People to teach others about the history. Our response: CHAT Juneteenth – an innovative tool that helps people educate themselves on this piece of American History by simply asking questions about the holiday. So we can get back to doing what we've been doing on Juneteenth for over 150 years. Built on the Putney website, including the efforts from nearly 20 Black American employees from BarkleyOKRP, the chatbot exclusively answers questions about Juneteenth, in its own voice and gives you resources to continue your educational journey. Happy Juneteenth! To quote John Albuquerque, "Let's make Juneteenth a commemorative, not of the horrific institution our country embraced, but rather as a showcase of the strength in the American spirit to recognize wrong and set about making it right ... Let us celebrate all that Juneteenth teaches us about our country's greatness in our use of the heart to hear and to learn and to work together for all that is good and just." In 2021, Juneteenth was recognized as a federal holiday, marking a significant milestone in American history. From its origins in Galveston, Texas, in 1865 to its nationwide celebration, Juneteenth symbolizes the ongoing journey towards equality in the United States. General Order No. 3, issued by Major General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865, liberated those who were enslaved, bringing an end to a long-standing institution in the nation's history. Since then, Juneteenth has evolved into a day of celebration, with the first recorded observance dating back to 1866, primarily within church communities due to segregation laws at the time. Over the years, Juneteenth festivities expanded across the southern states, encompassing various traditions like communal meals, fairs, and baseball games. As the Civil Rights Movement gained momentum, Juneteenth celebrations became more widespread in the 1970s, transcending regional boundaries. By 1979, Juneteenth was celebrated in every U.S. state and the District of Columbia, with parts of Mexico also recognizing the day. Following its designation as a federal holiday, Juneteenth has grown in prominence, marked by Jubilee-style celebrations featuring cookouts, cultural events, and public readings. This annual commemoration of freedom not only unites communities across the nation but also underscores the universal principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all individuals. As we reflect on our progress and the work that lies ahead, Juneteenth serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing pursuit of justice and equality for all, both locally and globally.
