Come and find out about where I live, an amazing example of how community-owned housing looks and works, at our open day on 25th May. Chapeltown Cohousing is an amazing blueprint of affordable, community-led housing that has the potential to solve so many problems of our housing crisis. It provides those who live here with: 💥 A community to combat loneliness. 💥 Multiple diverse voices, reducing social division. 💥 Affordable rent with no private profit. 💥 Healthy and sustainable houses. 💥 A super strong sense of place. As a model it has the potential to help with: 🌼 Brownfield land development. 🌼 Increasing the quality of housing. 🌼 Keeping the private rental market in check. 🌼 Connecting people to the land they live on. 🌼 Promoting stewardship (of our neighbourhood, city, planet). So come down if you are interested and feel free to share :) There will be lunch !

Great explainer by CalMatters on why #housing costs in #california are so high... "California just doesn’t have enough housing to keep up with demand. The difference between the number of homes we need and the number we’ve been building has been growing for decades." Read more at https://buff.ly/3UZCw0d #housingcrisis #HousingForAll

You may have heard that the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council has opened submissions on its Three-Year Plan (2024 – 2027) which proposes to cut its current funding of $120,000 per year to Te Mata Park Trust. This is a third of our annual funding, the loss of which could have very real consequences, including the possibility that health and safety issues (brought about by under-funded maintenance) could lead to Park closures. Cutting a third of our operating budget could put Te Mata Park Trust in an untenable position; fail to protect the region’s most important recreational, historical and cultural taonga; and undermine all the investment and volunteer time that has gone into the Park in recent years. We know that times are tough, and budgets are stretched, but if you believe that the Park should continue to be part-funded by HBRC, please have your say and make a submission. With the community’s support we hope to influence HBRC to continue to fund Te Mata Park Trust and ensure the Park is protected and enhanced for future generations. If you would like to make a submission to HBRC to support the retention of Te Mata Park’s funding, please go to the Protect the Peak page on the Te Mata Park website where we have summarised some useful information to assist you. To make the process easier, we have prepared some text that you might like to use in your submission. Thank you for supporting Te Mata Park. #protectthepeak https://lnkd.in/gX57wYry

ICYMI: Last week, the City of Jacksonville and Jacksonville Transportation Authority kicked off an ongoing partnership to plant trees at bus stops throughout the city to provide shade for transit riders, beautify the city, and improve community health. This marks the first phase of trees to be identified and planted through the City and JTA collaboration with funding from the Jacksonville Tree Commission. Future phases of tree plantings at bus stops will be coordinated by the Office of Resilience, Department of Public Works, and JTA. “The plan will ensure trees are properly maintained ensure safety, provide ecological benefits, and make our public spaces beautiful," said Mayor Donna Deegan. "It will guide serve as a guide for the City’s Tree Commission to distribute the City’s Tree Fund for planting the right trees in the right places." When you live in or visit Sayulita, it’s easy to take for granted the charm of this little beach town—the vibrant streets, the preserved coastline, the sense of community. What many people don’t realize is that much of this is thanks to Grupo Pro Sayulita, a grassroots organization that quietly works behind the scenes to protect and enhance our town. 🌴💪 But here’s the thing: most people have no idea how much they do. 🛑 Stopping Overdevelopment A recent example? Grupo Pro Sayulita single-handedly defeated a proposed zoning law that would’ve allowed 8-story buildings on our beaches. That move could’ve turned Sayulita into just another overdeveloped tourist spot. They rallied the community, raised funds, and hired lawyers to protect the character of our town. 💧 Infrastructure Improvements From tackling sewage issues to supporting water quality initiatives, they step in where government agencies often can’t or won’t. When things go wrong, people might wonder, “What’s Grupo Pro Sayulita doing?”—but it’s important to remember, they’re not the government. They’re volunteers working tirelessly for the betterment of Sayulita. 🌟 Why It Matters Without their efforts, the Sayulita we know and love could look very different. If you’ve ever enjoyed the charm of this town, whether on vacation or as a resident, chances are Grupo Pro Sayulita has had a hand in preserving that magic. If you’re as grateful as I am, consider learning more about what they do—or better yet, get involved. Supporting Grupo Pro Sayulita is supporting the future of this incredible community.

I often get asked to explain in greater detail what is it that I actually do—even by members of my own family—and I totally get the confusion especially when you toss the term “brownfield” around😵💫!!! The simple answer is that it’s my job to make people aware of brownfields while also advertising our free services by way of graphics, webinars, how-to videos, and so on. Here’s a little series of graphics I made with the help of the NJIT TAB team to try to help break it down.
🔎 What’s a Brownfield? Curious about what these sites are, where they are found, and how they can transform communities? 👉 Swipe through our carousel to learn: ✅ What a brownfield is. ✅ Where you can find them (hint: everywhere!). ✅ What they can become – parks, housing, playgrounds, and more! ✅ Who benefits from redevelopment (everyone, including animals!). 💡 Did you know? There are over 450,000 brownfields in the United States. At NJIT TAB, we’re here to empower communities to clean up and repurpose these spaces – at NO COST to local governments and non-profits. Let’s turn challenges into opportunities for your community. 🌱 📍 Learn more: https://njit.edu/tab 🔗 Follow us for more brownfield redevelopment insights! #CommunityRevitalization #EnvironmentalRedevelopment #NJITTAB #LearnMore #CommunityHealth #Brownfields

Putting funds into what communities value
🏡The Somerset Levels and Moors Shed (SLaMS) were awarded £4,920 of funding from the Hinkley Point C (HPC) Community Fund, to build recycling bin storage shelters for housing association tenants living in Bridgwater. ♻In total the Shedders built 41 recycling bin shelters to help the community feel prouder of their homes, encourage recycling, and help reduce littering. 💭Amelia Thompson, Senior Programmes Manager at SCF, said: “Organisations like SLaMs play an important role in our communities, offering connection, conversation, and creation. They encourage people to come together and support their local area and projects.” 👉Read the full story https://lnkd.in/eTP6KypS #Somerset #Bridgwater #SomersetNews #BridgwaterNews EDF (UK) Bridgwater Mercury Andrew Cockcroft Freya Rosengren (nee Lee) Justin Sargent OBE DL Sue Wheeler UK Men's Sheds Association UK Men's Sheds
