In the quiet of early morning, the sun rise gilds the sky as prayer flags flutter in mediative contemplation of the day ahead and daily purification rituals are performed. In a land where prosperity is measured in happiness, mists rise over the forests as crystal-clear rivers tumble down from the mountains. Twenty years after Amankora's five lodges opened and Bhutan continues to enthral in all its otherworldly majesty.

I had the chance to discover 4 of the 5 Aman lodges in spectacular Bhutan last December. Drinking fresh-from-the-garden papaya smoothie in Punakha and experience the traditional hot stone bath in a middle of a field in Gangtey will stay in my memory forever.

"SARPA-KAVU"
(groves of snakes or snake shrines)
of KERALA.
Almost Every temple and every house in Kerala has a space dedicated to NAGA (serpent) Devta..
A Sarpa-Kavu usually has tiny snake idols smeared with turmeric, where a diya(lamp) is lit everyday.
According to legend, #Parasurama created Kerala from the Arabian Sea & donated it to the Nampoothiris to atone for his sins from killing numerous Kshatriyas...
It’s believed—PARSHURAMA in an effort to let people inhabit Kerala, a densely forested place, promised lord SHIVA to worship snakes and not kill them.
He Established 2 Nagaraja temples—Vettikottu & Mannarassala. Latter hs abt 30,000 snake idols & images...
There’s an Annual ritual called Sarpa-thullal(snake-dance) done at KAVU, performed by people called Pulluvan.
It’s done under strict supervision like—Kalam(rangoli) for the occasion should be prepared with 5 colours using NATURAL ingredients.
It’s an Enthralling experience!..

The consecration of Temple of Ram Lalla (child Ram) earlier today was the hottest topic in all my friends circles. The journey to reclaim heritage in indepenent India started as far back as 1949, couple of years after independence. Great to see this come to fruition, along with a planned new Babri masjid in Ayodhya. Here are some interesting tidbits about the temple itself.

Why is the Ayodhya Ram Temple such a Big Deal in India?
Ayodhya is to Hindus what Mecca is to Muslims and Nazareth to Christians.
Ahead of the Grand Opening of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, India on January 22nd, 2024 by Indian Prime Minister Modi, it would be useful to understand the centrality of Rama Avatar in Hinduism, and how his larger than life personality still has a mythical hold over millions of Hindus, several thousand years after the Ramayana Epic was composed.
It’s holds a unique place in Indian spiritual Literature ( Smriti) & History ( Itihasa) on par with the Mahabharata ( Great Epic of the Bharata Dynasty) and is similar to the reverence with which the Iliad and the Odyssey were held in Ancient Greece.
In Sikhism, Rama is mentioned as one of twenty-four divine avatars of Vishnu in the Chaubis Avtar in Dasam Granth.
Rama legends are also found in the texts of Jainism and Buddhism, though he is sometimes called Pauma or Padma in these texts.
Rising above the Indian and international media cacophony and political controversy of the temple, what is the message of Rama and the Ramayana?
What does it mean to be good? 'Maryada' is a commonly used word for 'boundary' in Sanskrit which also means 'propriety of conduct'.
In the context of the Ramayana, ( aka Rama’s Journey) the word carries special weight because it comes to be used as the defining virtue of Rama, the 'Maryada Purshottam'. ( the Man Par Excellence)
But despite the fact that Rama is regarded as the epitome of Dharma in his thoughts and deeds, the Ramayana does not provide us with just one single template for right action.
It implies that Dharma is a multiplicity of appropriate choices, ( e.g.Rama’s wrongful banishment of his loyal wife Sita because of a bazaar rumour in his Kingdom ) .
Rama’s conflict between his being the rightful heir to the throne and honouring his father’s promise to his step mother, who insists that the throne be handed over to her biological son Bharat & that Rama her stepson be banished from the kingdom of Ayodhya for 14 years.
Or being torn by his conjugal love for Sita and his Dharmic duty as a King, shows us that when we choose one way of being and doing over another, we will be as often wrong as we are right.
Rama’s triumphant return to Ayodhya after an eventful exile of 14 years is celebrated the world over by Hindus as Diwali which ushers in the Indian New Year.
The themes of these epics, ( Ramayana & Mahabharata)with their exploration of human nature, morality, Dharma & Karma continue to resonate with contemporary Indian and international audiences.
The entire life story of Rama and his companions allegorically discusses duties, rights and social responsibilities of an individual. It illustrates dharma and dharmic living through model characters
In summary, Ayodhya, Mathura and Varanasi( Benares) are to Hindus what the Vatican, Nazareth and Jerusalem are to Christians and Mecca, Medina and Karbala to Muslims.
