⭐️Choice is so important⭐️ This happened yesterday and it just highlights why we try and give families choice wherever we can 🥰 Huge thanks to Sal's Shoes who provided the shoes for our school uniform support, helping to reduce the burden of probably the most boring thing a parent has to buy for their child… Uniform is a leveller in schools, I get that, but… When you go to work your employer pays for your uniform if it’s mandatory, but for schools - parents have to stump up the costs, and don’t get me started on schools that insist on branded items that cost families an entire months food budget and more (and then refer families to us for support - real story…) When a headteacher can show me the evidence that branded socks improves a child’s educational attainment, I might change my opinion, but no one has shown me that research yet. Anyway, I digress. In last 2 days we’ve supported 21 children to pick out their own school shoes for September so they can head into school confidently, and give parents the relief that they don’t have to go skip meals to afford school shoes for the new term. Give our kids room to get on and off safely. 3️⃣ **Wait Patiently:** Don't proceed until the bus turns off its flashing red lights, withdraws the stop sign, and starts moving again. Hello LinkedIn Family! For the last seven months I have been volunteering at the Johnson Boys and Girls Club, one of 25 Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver. Of the three Boys & Girls Clubs of America I have spent time at over the last 10 years, this club has the best programming I have seen. From a STEM room donated by the Denver Nuggets, to woodworking, to a Social-Emotional Learning group, this club has an incredible amount to offer. However, what I have noticed during my time is how 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻'𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗹𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗰 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗶𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗯. The children at the Johnson club are predominately black and Latinx, with a bit of Middle Eastern and Asian as well. However, nearly every book I come across features white characters. I believe it is incredibly important for children to see they are represented in all aspects of life, including what they read. 𝗧𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝘆𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗯, 𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗺𝗮𝘇𝗼𝗻. 𝗜 𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟰𝟬𝟬 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀.I know this may sound crazy, but I believe with our network we can do it. You will find books for ages 4-12 and young adult options as well. Most books will feature black and Latinx characters, but you will also find some Muslim and Asian characters. All books on the registry will default to being sent to my apartment and then I will bring them to the Boys and Girls Club in January 2024. You are welcome to donate as many as you would like, paperback or hardcopy, new or used.
