I've been working at the Climate Justice Organizing HUB for just over a year as our Activist Resource Person and one of the top requests we get for support from grassroots groups is "recruitment and retention". This is also an area of focus highlighted in my recently published report "Tools for Change" (link below). When we received a request from For Our Kids for a tailored recruitment and retention workshop, I decided to try a different approach. After a one-on-one conversation with one of the team leads, we uncovered that challenges with recruitment and retention reflected underlying struggles with several interrelated factors pertaining to distributed leadership, leadership development, team structure and purpose. The workshop I developed and delivered is a bit unconventional - its focus is campaigns and teams - but I think it gets to some foundational considerations that require attention in grassroots organizations, even before we can begin discussing and refining practices for onboarding, one-on-ones, ladders of engagement/circles of commitment etc. Check it out and let me know your thoughts! https://lnkd.in/gBDRPa4A Tools for Change report: https://lnkd.in/d_tRmR_r

I wish I would have learned earlier in my career the importance of vocalizing what I need, and what's important to me in terms of my development. If you don't ask, you will never get. Of course, there is a balance between this, and being an entitled jerk :) Very early in my career, I was given the advice to essentially do as I was told and not rock the boat, which made me gun-shy about expressing what was important to me. Indeed, I believe it is important to embrace the challenges and opportunities that come with being the rookie, and learn as much as you can from every situation. But, there is also value in respectfully questioning from a place of curiosity to learn the broader context , and to be transparent with your leaders about what is important to you at that time in your career. And by the way - it's okay if early in your career, money is the most important thing to you, and you communicate that to your leader. Obviously, your expectations need to be tempered by the role you're in, and what can be done within the guidelines of the organization, but by creating open dialogue with your leader, you will know where you stand.

If you really want inclusion and diversity, TODAY target training budgets to front line underrepresented employees with a focus on building an internal pipeline of people skilled at thinking. 🎤 While not in higher level, high paying positions, these groups need a boost in problem solving, engagement, and collaboration skills. This will facilitate impactful contributions which will increase their visibility and promotability and shift the perception of their capabilities in the minds of executives and coworkers. This will at the same time, boost their confidence, which is critical to success. 🔌 Similarly, if you improve the collaborative leadership, problem solving, communication, and systems thinking skills of the employees with high-interface ratios (number of daily contacts with other employees), this has an osmotic benefit to the entire organization with permeating impact.

At Inspire, we want to be open and honest; we want to be transparent with our aims and way of working and so our first value is called “Clear Expectations”. We believe that having clear expectations has extensive benefits to both our young people and our staff. It enables trust to be built on honest and open communication for everyone and maintains consistency for our young people 🙌 Having clear expectations ensures consistency in our homes, which is very important for young people to feel at home. The nature of our homes means that there are many different staff members on a shift and rota basis. Having clear expectations means that there is consistency amongst the different staff members as well as individuality. When everyone is on the same page regarding their roles, responsibilities, and behaviour, it creates a stable and predictable environment ✨ To read more about our values, click here 👉 https://brnw.ch/21wKZM8

For the elective I'm following at RSM (DIFW RSM), I had the privilege of participating in an enriching panel session recently, delving into the crucial topics of Diversity, Inclusion, and the Future of Work. It was an eye-opening experience that underscored the importance of fostering a workplace culture that celebrates differences and paves the way for a more inclusive and equitable future. The different panellists gave valuable insights on the different questions asked by students. One of the key takeaways from our discussion was the power of open conversations as the way for a more inclusive workplace. It's not just about ticking boxes but actively creating an environment where everyone feels heard and valued. Unconscious bias is a challenge we all face. Our conversation underscored the importance of awareness and education to address these biases head-on. By fostering a culture of continuous learning and self-reflection, we can collectively work towards dismantling preconceived notions and creating a more level playing field. I extend my gratitude to the panellists and everyone who participated. This session was a reminder that real change begins with open, honest conversations and a commitment to continuous improvement. Let's carry the momentum forward, I am excited to keep working on this topic in the coming weeks.
