Amazon Web Services (AWS)’s Post

Amazon Web Services (AWS) reposted this

This year marks Elastic Block Store's (EBS) 16th anniversary, and I've asked Sr. Principal Engineer, Marc Olson, to write about his experiences working on the foundational #AWS service for more than a decade. Marc provides an insider's view of how the EBS team iteratively scaled storage performance over more than a decade - from spinning disks to adopting SSDs, custom networking protocols, offload hardware, and more. Beyond the technical details, he shares insights on organizational practices, empowering engineers, continuous improvement through measurement, and fostering an innovative culture. It's a unique behind-the-scenes look at building massively scalable services at AWS. Whether you're an experienced systems engineer or just curious about large-scale software architecture, Marc's guest post is well worth a read from one of our tenured engineers. Wait a minute 🤔 how can a post about something as plain as block storage be relevant these days? It has no #GenAI revelations!  And worse: 4,802 words! Read it - if you are not a systems engineer or architect but, for example, involved in decisions about the future of your IT.  Reflect on the DNA that this company apparently is made of.  Remember that this is ‘only’ their story about ‘just’ block storage (you know, disk drives). #cloud #innovation #scale

The progress which EBS has gone through is groundbreaking and inspiring. An incredible journey. Congrats to you and the AWS team behind EBS Werner Vogels

...and in there....one takeaway for many: "The thing that made this possible is that we designed our system from the start with non-disruptive maintenance events in mind." Good stuff indeed.

16 years of EBS, that's quite a milestone! Scaling storage performance is no small feat. I'm curious to read about the journey from spinning disks to custom hardware. In my experience, the tech behind the scenes is often as fascinating as the end product. The organizational insights sound particularly valuable too - always interesting to see how different companies approach innovation.
