🌍 Amazon Drives Sustainability Forward: A Call to Action for Suppliers 🌍 According to Packaging Dive, Amazon is taking bold steps to ensure sustainability across its supply chain as part of its ambitious goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. In their 2023 Sustainability Report, Amazon is now requiring its highest-emitting suppliers, who contribute over 50% of the company's supply chain emissions, to submit decarbonization plans and show real progress over time. Suppliers who fail to comply will be deprioritized. Amazon’s Sustainability Exchange offers valuable resources to help companies on this journey. While Amazon has seen a 3% reduction in emissions in 2023, its overall carbon footprint has increased by 34.5% since 2019, highlighting the ongoing challenge. As a large multinational, Amazon has a serious responsibility and role to play in ensuring sustainability is and becomes an increasing focus of its operations. For the last five years, Amazon has co-led The Climate Pledge and to-date can count successes such as the one below - holding itself and its supply chain partners accountable to sustainability efforts. So how can a company that delivers millions of goods each year, runs services like AWS, Amazon Fresh, Prime Video, etc. drive the conversation around sustainability? 💡 Of particular interest to me: launching the Amazon Sustainability Exchange, providing free resources to suppliers by sharing previously proprietary information that will help companies of all sizes take meaningful steps toward net zero. For the fourth year in a row, Amazon (The Climate Pledge co-founder and signatory) has clinched the title of the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy. 👏 The IEA 2023 Renewables Report forecasts a monumental shift in the global power mix by 2028. As the world gears up to add nearly 3 700 GW of new renewable capacity, Amazon is at the forefront with 500+ solar and wind projects globally, totaling over 28 GW of clean energy capacity. Transitioning to carbon-free energy sources is one of the most impactful ways to lower carbon emissions, and is part of Amazon’s Climate Pledge commitment to reach net-zero carbon across their operations by 2040. In 2019, Amazon set a goal to match all of the electricity used across the global operations – including data centres, corporate buildings, grocery stores and fulfilment centres – with 100% renewable energy by 2030. Today, we’re proud to share that we’ve met that goal seven years ahead of schedule. To get there, we’ve become the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy in the world for four years running, according to Bloomberg NEF, and have invested billions of dollars in more than 500 solar and wind projects globally, which together are capable of generating enough energy to power the equivalent of 21.9 million EU homes. Achieving this goal is an important milestone in our efforts to meet our Climate Pledge commitment of net-zero carbon by 2040.
