Doug Zembiec passed seventeen years ago. May 11th, 2007. Much has been written on his accomplishments, including how he earned the nickname "The Lion of Fallujah." All-American wrestler. Recon Marine. Completed numerous combat deployments. And received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He's best known for the way he conducted himself in battle. Becoming a legend in the Marine Corps for his aggression and for placing the safety of his Marines in front of his own. In my opinion. The most remarkable thing about Doug is what happened in the days after Doug died. When Doug was laid to rest in Arlington, it was a designed as a closed ceremony, not open to the general public. Invitations were extended to Doug's family, his close friends, and any service member who served alongside him. When the day came, more than a thousand Marines showed up. Enlisted Marines who'd served under Doug's command. When asked by a local reporter, what had drawn such a crowd, a fellow officer said "Your men have to follow your orders, but they don't have to go to your funeral." Punch Line: The things we do, the metrics we achieve, they're all merely artifacts of the people we are. The way we show up in the world, for our teams, for our families, for each other - is and will always be what people care most about. Although the character MAJ Payne is a fictitious USMC officer suited with inequalities requiring him to embrace teaching as a fortitude. Enabling reality with fiction warrants a likeness to reality. All officers are required to have a Bachelors degree to be an officer unless circumstances put that Soldier in the Audie Murphy promotion scenario. Damon Wayans researched military service members, incorporated REAL tactics and procedures utilized by officers and enlisted service members of varied branches to bring MAJ Payne alive; alive to teach values, traditions and equity to a generation of individualism type of thinkers. That aspect of teaching served as a catalyst for entertainment but… it also warranted lessons of humanity. Everything read does not constitute the lesson; action applied with the material reading, construes the reality of the lesson.

Veterans supporting Veterans! In a recent interview with Infantry #marine #veteran Brandon Hagar (IG: hagar_thefitbear), we discussed the athletic expectations while serving especially from his lens of being in the Marines. Our conversation touched on the extremes that can arise while serving in the military, leading to unhealthy practices like yo-yo dieting, binge drinking, and emotional stress. Such practices can take a toll on one's body. Brandon's guidance in making healthy, long-lasting changes is admirable. His approach, which delves into the emotional and mental aspects of fitness, helps in making long-lasting, sustaining behavior changes. It's always inspiring to see Veterans taking care of their mind, body, and spirit. Let's continue to support each other in this journey.

It goes without saying that upstream interventions lead to positive outcomes down stream. Military to civilian transition is a crucial time to connect these service members and their families to available services in housing, health care, employment, education, benefits, and social enrichment. The DoD/VA Liasion Office has agreements with the states to share information that allows local County Veteran Service Officers to better reach transitioning service members. In North Carolina that data is not pushed down to counties. Any effort that doesn’t involve the counties/local communities at the grassroots level is missing the mark! Time for the state to give that contact data to the County Veteran Service Offices (CVSO) and the VA to let us be involved in programs like Solid Start. These things would better enable CVSOs to ensure we connect veterans to services. We need state and national veteran leaders to assist.
