WARNING ❗ When the CEO of a start up begins to dictate to the Chief Medical Officer - Trouble is a brewing ! "Patients first - not profits first" - is one of the most important things in medical devices. The minute that the focus of a startup becomes "Sell, sell, sell" at all costs. Then problems start to creep in. Let's not forget that the Chief Medical Officer has a few vital roles: Patient safety - first and foremost Ensuring products are clinically fit for purpose Ensuring clinical use is ethical and meaningful Guiding the company on the emerging trends of the medical zeitgeist And interfacing with the medical community A key danger is a new CEO comes in - a "commercial focused" CEO that is told to "Just get sales up" - and the critical safety role of the CMO is pushed to one side. Things change - and the CMO no longer gets the freedom to make the right clinical decisions for the product, the way the product is designed, evaluated or released. The danger is that the "alpha" commercial team now runs the show, and the Netflix documentary team start lining up. The freedom and integrity of a CMO to be able to interface with the medical community, unhindered, and free from commercial bias is a critical safety back stop for any startup. The minute that the CMO "Stops turning up at critical congresses and events" the community knows that "Things aren't right." The CMOs credibility can take a dive as the community feels "They've sold out." Many times CEOs underestimate the standing a decent CMO has in the medical community, they undervalue the impact that they have on the market, the trust they build in the product and company. Many new CEOs (and even some long standing CEOs) can quickly forget that "Medical" comes before "Device" in our industry. The long list of disasters we see is when the clinical advice is ignored or sidelined. And once the CEO starts to override the CMO... trouble is around the corner. Some of the best startups I've seen are where there is a mutual respect between all the departments, an understanding at the leadership level the role of the CMO. It is critical that the CEO has a full understanding of the role of their CMO in a "modern" medical device company. And allows them an unhindered - clinical based approach to their role - with patient safety first. Cost containment in the clinical department should be the last thing. It becomes pretty clear to the entire medical community once a company has switched from sound clinical principles to commercial centric behaviour. I advise in keeping those boundaries clear and unambiguous - and the longer a startup can stay true to its primary clinical mission (the reason it was founded) - doing the right thing for the patients and caregivers - the better that startup will thrive in the long term. 🌟 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝗺 𝗜 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀? 🌟 That is a question that is close to my 💛 and let me tell you why... Both of our kids reminded me of how important medical devices are in our lives. They had a rough start in the first months of their lives. One began with a very nasty virus that led her to the ICU when she was only a few days old, and the other was born prematurely. It's no exaggeration to say that both our children owe their lives to the critical use of medical devices. In those moments, you want nothing but the best for your family, and you trust that the devices used are safe and effective. When I work with medical devices, my motto is simple: 💡 𝗜𝗳 𝗜 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀? 🤨 💪 Therefore, it is my 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 to use my knowledge and experience to help clinical research professionals, both in the industry and in healthcare, find the right path within clinical research with medical devices. Quality and integrity are of paramount importance in this journey. The challenges often lie in the interpretation and implementation of laws and regulations, navigating those tricky gray areas. But with a good dose of common sense, you can turn legislation and regulations into an effective process that works seamlessly in your daily practice because, let's face it, in reality, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲! ☯ 🤝 So, here's to a passionate journey in the world of clinical research with medical devices. Spending 25 years in healthcare has always made me appreciate the work put in by HCPs and the para medical staff. But nothing like experiencing the work first hand. Recently I had to go in for an elective surgery and I am what can be most politely described as a ‘Scaredy-cat’ patient. Never having had any kind of medical procedure done on self I was a mass of nerves and border line hysteric by the time I met the doctor. She on the other hand had a zen like demeanour – held my hand and calmed my soul taking me though the entire process and answering my more than a million questions. Come the D-Day – getting admitted to the hospital and imagine the most nervous you have ever got – multiply it by a 100 and then maybe you can imagine the state I was in. Believe me – the entire staff of doctors, nurses, the hospital workers -’mausis’ etc were there and took my every tantrum and jitteriness with practiced aplomb. Every query was answered, every step explained and not only that but they shared their own stories with me to build my courage. The surgery went well and I am on the road to recovery – Fingers crossed. However, the 3-day stay at the hospital taught me some valuable lessons. ‘Customer Relationship Management’ and ‘Patient Centricity’ are two words that have been so often repeated in the last few years. Here is my personal take on both of them – 1.    You don’t always need money or expensive gifts to manage any customer 2.    Heartfelt understanding, empathy and offering sound medical knowledge can do wonders to manage a relationship 3.    Patient Centricity is nothing but making the patient feel at the centre of the circle – I felt special, cherished as if the entire set of people around me had only one motive – to make me recover as soon as possible. 4.    Patient centricity cannot succeed unless the last person in the scheme of things does not embody it Dr. Tamanna Singhai – you are a rockstar Dr. Nitin Shah – You are a rockstar too All the staff at Vinayak nursing home – Thank you once again for being a thorough professional and a warm human being as well. #marketing, #pharmamarketing, #patientcentricity, #CRM
