First special element pushed ✨   The Fehmarnbelt Tunnel by FLC for Femern A/S is built of 79 standard tunnel elements and 10 special elements. 🚧 The first of the 10 special elements is fully cast and ready to be pushed from the casting area to the upper basin of the Work Harbour. 🤩 But moving a concrete colossus of 24,000 tons is no small feat. 🤔 Two large pushers with two pistons each gently shoved the element towards the destination at a speed of 13 meters per hour. ⏳ After 12 hours, the journey is completed and the proud team of FLC employees could see many years of effort bear fruit. 🥳💪 The special element now rests in the upper basin. Four years ago, as design lead, Expedition Engineering Ltd started designing AVA, a new generation modular footbridge system for Network Rail. We added a modular lift system that is precommissioned, preclad, complete with preinstalled lift-car, and delivered on a flatbed truck ready to dropped onto its base over a weekend. Network Rail and Innovate UK provided some funding for the design of a demonstrator, and we formed an innovation consortium including Expedition Engineering Ltd, Hawkins\Brown, Walker Construction UK Ltd, McNealy Brown Limited and SCX to design, build and co-fund the full sized bridge demonstrator. The bridge is made of robotically-cut and folded stainless steel plate, and is lean, with an assembled quality closer to the car industry than traditional civil engineering: with low lifetime cost, carbon, and superlow maintenance…and extremely fast to build…..(but you know all that already) SO (pause for breath)…. It is absolutely brilliant to see the first bridge prep being installed over the live railway at Stowmarket. As NR’s Frank Anatole says: “a game-changer”, not just for rail bridges but for all types of design products across all infrastructure sectors. The lessons reach far and wide and we are proud ro be such a key part of it.

HS2 | Assembly of TBMs for 7.2km Euston tunnels commences Engineers from Skanska Costain STRABAG Joint Venture Strabag JV (SCS) have commenced the assembly of two large tunnelling machines (TBMs), weighing 1,250t each, that will bore the remaining 7.2km of High Speed 2 (HS2) into central London. #hs2 Manufactured by Herrenknecht AG in Germany, the two TBMs were transported to Old Oak Common in segments and lifted into a box under Old Oak Common using a 750t crane, where they will be reassembled. Equipped with an 8.53m cutterhead designed to efficiently cut through London clay, the machines will work at an average depth of 7.55m and advance approximately 16m per day. SCS is in charge of constructing the twin-bored tunnel. The team has already created a logistics tunnel for material transport and for the removal of excavated soil. The drives from Old Oak Common to Euston are slated to commence in 2025 and will take approximately 18 months. Once their journeys conclude, the outer casings of the TBMs will remain as part of the tunnel’s structure, with mechanical components being dismantled and extracted. The approach to Euston will involve spray concrete-lined tunnels transitioning into three additional tunnels to facilitate train movement into the station. BALFOUR BEATTY VINCI COMPLETES BEAM INSTALLATION AHEAD OF SCHEDULE Balfour Beatty VINCI has completed the installation of 120 concrete beams on a 14,500-tonne box structure for the HS2 (High Speed Two) Ltd line under the A46 Kenilworth Bypass in Warwickshire. The beams, measuring 13 to 24m, were lifted into place using three giant cranes. This milestone was achieved ahead of schedule in 14 days, representing major progress in this engineering project. The structure, built on land adjacent to the A46, eliminates up to two years of traffic management. This construction method reduces disruption while ensuring the safe and efficient completion of complex works. With the beams installed, the next steps are completing the deck, the flat surface on top of the beams and installing parapets. In spring, the structure will be moved into its final position beneath the A46 using an advanced jacking system by Freyssinet. This system will move the box at 2.5m per hour over 64m.
