As a member of the LGBT communities, I acknowledge the steps that different communities take to acknowledge and support these communities during #PrideMonth2024 and every year. Some ask if it is still needed. I am reminded of the: 64 countries where privately lived homosexuality is illegal; 12 countries which impose the death penalty for privately lived homosexuality; and 14 countries which criminalise gender identity being expressed by members of the trans community. Those who live and love freely do not need to be grateful for having the same freedoms afforded to others. We should never, however, take the right to live and love freely for granted. Laws and views change. We should never pull up the drawbridge behind us but remember the experience is not the same for everyone. The case for change is not over until all humans can live and love with whichever adult they choose. Finally, I never assume that negative views when expressed are always founded on intolerance and hatred. Even if sometimes they obviously are. Views and reactions can sometimes come from ignorance or lack of experience or exposure to these communities and their members. Where this is the case our reaction should be to help people understand rather than point the finger of expectation and judgment. Understanding and empathy is iterative and context specific, not absolute. However uncomfortable that is. Inclusion and understanding are verbs rather than nouns. They are not flags and festivals. They are not the lived experience of too many people. They need an active demonstration and intention every day. Not just in one month per year. The fact, however, that visibility and expression of solidarity does happen during this month is a solid way to chip away at barriers to understanding and progress. It means so much to me that Loop In Events is Rainbow Registered through Canada's 2SLGBTQI+ Chamber of Commerce (CGLCC) While Pride month is wrapping up in a lot of places, the need for visibility, equality, inclusion, and protection continues every day. One simple event tip: do your registration sheets ask for pronouns? Are pronouns on your name tags? My favourite Transcom value is “we come as we are” In my life I’ve been told that I should develop a “corporate” personality to be successful. Keeping a corporate persona is exhausting when it’s not naturally who I am. So I didn’t take that advice. Developing two personas would be like splitting myself in two, or hiding a part of myself. Hiding who you are to “fit in” is not normal or healthy. And I don’t believe it’s a choice someone should have to make. Be proud, bold and fearless in who you are as a person. Take pride in yourself 24/7 /365 - no matter what your sexuality, gender, religious beliefs, neurodivergence or personality! Just be you, and come to the workplace as you are. #Authentic #workplace #pride #transcom
