"We have long had the science to prove reprocessing is safe, and more recently because of peer reviewed life cycle assessments, we know they substantially cut emissions compared to using virgin devices," said Daniel J. Vukelich, President and CEO, AMDR. "But now, we’ve created a free calculator tool – available for all to use – so that hospitals everywhere can approximate how much they are reducing their carbon footprint by using reprocessed 'single-use' devices." By using rSUDs, AMDR members help over 9,500 U.S. #hospitals and surgical centers slash pollution-causing waste from the medical supply chain while saving costs and critical resources. Andersen joins people worldwide in celebrating World Environment Day.    ‘Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration’— this year’s slogan holds vital importance for all of us. Deforestation, pollution, and environmental degradation undermine people’s health, leading to an increase in chronic conditions, malnutrition, and troubled access to clean water and air.    The results of a recently published prospective study from Italy highlight that the presence of microscopic plastic particles in our organs is linked to a subsequent 4.5-fold increase in all-cause mortality, heart attacks, and strokes (the link to the article by famous US physician and scientist Eric Topol, MD is in the first comment).   Along with logistics, automotive, and manufacturing, the healthcare industry also has a significant environmental footprint. This stems from resource-intensive hospital operations, non-biodegradable medical waste, greenhouse gas emissions throughout supply chains, and more. It is evident that when considering medtech progress, we should be aware of its ‘environmental price.’   But we all can make an impact too. It isn’t necessary to buy an expensive electric car to do this. You can simply take a bus when commuting to your workplace instead of driving, or cycle instead of taking a bus. Many of Andersen’s offices provide shower access for those who use bicycles to get to work. Surely, everyone can decrease their use of plastic in everyday life—there is growing evidence that it could be a really life-prolonging habit and beneficial for the planet. And there’s much more.   Some of Andersen’s digital solutions have an environmental impact too. For example: - We develop and deploy smart IoT systems to reduce energy and water consumption in healthcare settings. - Our logistics software helps to decrease fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. - Andersen’s telemedicine tools also help to reduce transportation emissions and costs. - Our EHRs curb paper waste. - Advanced analytics solutions help medical facilities identify environmental risks without jeopardizing patient care.
